I've just received from my son a Saitek X45 and MSN flight simulator program. Can anyone suggest what control to put into the X45 and what would be an ideal location on the X45 for these functions.
Don't know anything about flying so I'm looking for some directions.

What exactly are you asking?
When you say "Can anyone suggest what control to put into the X45", are you referring to assigning flight controls to the Saitek such as throttle, rudder,  etc...?

And "what would be an ideal location on the X45 for these functions" means that you are wondering which controls should be programmed where, correct?

Here's mine...or at least what I can remember of it.  It's just second nature now.  The best thing to do is do what feels natural to you.  Use this as a guideline if you wish:

Trigger- brakes on/off
A-left brakes
B-right brakes
Safe button-pushback
fire button C-spoilers

On the throttle:

Hat button 3:  flaps extend/retract
illuminated button:  gear up/down
mouse cursor control:  engines off

There are a few more I can't think of off the top of my frozen head, but this will get you in the right direction.

Thanks for the replys. When your not involved with this equipment it's best to ask those who are, saves a lot of trial and error.
Now if I can just figure out how to program the darn thing.

Not sure if this will help or not. I had a Saitek X36 combo which was the predecessor of the X45. Rather than try setting it all up from scratch I found it easier to download a readymade profile & modify it to my own requirements. I can't find one for FS9 but there's an X45 profile for FS2002 posted here which might come in handy as most of the commands will be the same. http://www.saitek.com/uk/down/x45pro.htm

I never bothered with the profiles, personally.  I just set everything up ingame.

Just unzip the file and load the profile, then open the profile
editior to see what switch/button does what...

Just my 2 cents here, but if you're new to the simulator as well, might I suggest you simply go with the default settings until you get comfortable with how everything works and feels, then re-program the controller as you like. It isn't difficult, but I bet we all have varying preferences. And I do like the X-45, after using force feedback sticks from MS and Logitech.
