Flattened Terrain

I had FS2002 and 2004 on my computer but just removed FS2002 to free up space on my computer.  Now when I fly FS2004 in the continental US the terrain is flattened to sea level for about 30 miles around the aircraft except for lakes and airports which are on plateaus at their correct altitudes.  Meshes that I added in the US are normal and the rest of the world is normal. Anyone know if removing FS2002 somehow could have caused this or what else the problem may be?

FS2002 & FS9 are completely separate programs & should not affect each other in any way. The only thing I can think of to explain this phenomenon is that you activated some of the addon scenery located in the FS2002 directory in FS9. This would be removed if you completely uninstalled FS2002.

Yea, I was afraid I'd have to reinstall.  It seems everytime I start flight sim it flattens differently. Sometimes it flattens everything within 30 or so miles of the aircraft, and sometimes only in sections along primary lattitude and longitude lines converging at degree confluence points.

I checked all my addon sceneries and they're all located within flightsim 9, so I don't think it was my removal of FS2002.

..mm....It'd would be nice to know how to repeat that at will and then go back at will to normal........I fancy landing on that airstrip and maybe on the lake...or hopping from peak to peak in a chopper...must be fun...commoner

To expand on Hagar's comment.......

Is it possible your were 'sharing' terrain mesh between the sims, i.e: terrain mesh add-ons activated in fs2004 from their stored location

I backed up FS9 to an external hard drive then uninstalled it from my main drive. When I reinstalled it, it was working fine so I started to reinstall all my scenery files from the backup.

It started flattening the terrain again after I got some files in, so I was able to pinpoint it to a terrain mesh file for Alaska.

I've removed that file and FS works fine again. I've also installed the bad file in FS2002 which I'm running from the backup external drive and it flattens the terrain there too.

So as long as that file is deactived or removed from either FS the terrain is normal.

Commoner and Fozzer, If you guys want to have a go at flying in that terrain I can send you that mesh file or upload it if you can recommend a good place to upload a 45MB file.

Some good flying in that terrain around South Lake Tahoe California or Lake Co. airport in Leadville Colorado. Leadville is the highest elevation airport in the US.

If you want a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach taxi slowly to the edge of the airport until you drop over the edge and then try to recover without stalling or hiting the ground.  Its pretty easy to do at the high elevation airports. I also did it off a lake with the amphibious Caravan.

Umm....that is if you want to take the risk of running a corrupt file on your computer.
