is this reason enought to re-install FS?

Postby legoalex2000 » Fri Dec 23, 2005 12:10 am

k here's my situation, that is leading me to the decision to re-install FS. i only do this when FS is just so screwed up, it doesnt work properly. here's the list:

too many useless addons (mostly aircraft)
if i touch the kneeboard, FS crashes
cant use ATC, can read  or hear messages sending or receiving
loading screens go missing, or misplaced on the screen
FSUIPC now doesnt work
if i change fuel, FS Crashes
if i change from full screen to winodw, FS Crashes
if i ALT+TAB FS, FS Crashes
loading the aircraft menu takes about 2 minutes
any Hong Kong scenery i have has now glitched and i can't fly in the hong kong area, period.

i think his is plenty of reasons  to re-install, but knowing me, i listen to all opinions made.

I think you need to reinstall, but make sure its a COMPLETE reinstall.  You need to delete all FS files after running an uninstall, then reinstall it.  Make a list of what you want/need in your new install so you can find it later

Ramos, please don't be so rash. You may have to re-install, but 1st consider a few things.
Back up your files. ie. your gauges, sounds and at least the default aircraft. Hopefully, your favourite sceneries, terrains and afcad files can be backed up too. After that, go ahead and re-install. Then add your files. Hopefully, the problems that caused your FS9 to run like a 3 legged elephant are not in your saved stuff. If so, you know how to eliminate the bad stuff. Go ahead "bite the bullet"

ok, seriously, dude... just the first 2 reasons would be more than enough for me to have the whole thing reinstalled :o :o

i think that if you have too many useless addons, it's best to not backup the whole folders.... the best thing you can do is to keep all your addons still zipped in a folder outside FS before installing them... then, once reinstalling is due, you need not to worry about backups, just reinstall it clean and whenever you feel like flying something or somewhere you had before, you just go for the .zip

that's my way ;)

You could use the old CFS/FS2002 trick by renaming the FS9 folder.

hey Doug, that sounds ever so useful. Do you mean this folder name and where is it saved?

Oh it's ok - I saw your reply with the same idea in another topic.

Yep. Rename the Flight Simulator 9 folder to any other name. Let's say Flight Simulator 9 old. You don't have to move it or save it anywhere.

If you did this with previous versions of FS you would have two completely separate installs that each ran independently. I had 4 separate versions of CFS2 sitting alongside each other & running quite happily at one time. I haven't tried it with FS9 & don't expect the backed up version would run as FS9.cfg is in a separate location.* I see no reason it couldn't still be used as a quick way to back up the old version.

*PS. Might be an idea to delete that before running the new install for the first time.

Thanks. I have a few probs with FS myself (though it doesn't affect the game like crashing it or anything).
In the New Year my resolutuion is to clean out and put right FS.  ;)

Please note that you might also have to rename fs9.exe for my method to work. This has been suggested in a similar topic. I've never tried this with FS9 so cannot confirm it either way.
