Not even sure if that is the correct terminology, but whenever I leave my home airport (SLC) ATC always sends me out and around in a direction that is never used in real life.  Is there any way to change that?

shut down AI and see what happens. ATC is supposedly vectoring you out around or to avoid other traffic  or traffic lanes...

FS9 doesn't contain SIDs and STARs, that's way.
Try using FSNavigator. :)

You are going to have to educate me a little on SIDs and STARs and FSNavigator - what are they?

SID - Standard Instrument Departure - is sort of like a departure path aircraft need to follow after takeoff

STAR - Standard Terminal Arrival - the same as a sid (kind of), but for arriving aircraft

FSNavigator is an addon flight planner which is a lot more complete than the in-game one and can give you the correct SIDs and STARs for your flight automatically, it's payware tho... but you can download the trial version that'll last for abot 20 uses  ;)

the FS2004 planner does not plan SIDs and STARs :P
