is there any other way to mark your route on the gps other than IFR?

Click on the WPT button on the gps (sometimes its an arrow)

It brings up a screen, with a flashing bar.  Move the cursor to the right (the gps cursor) and type in the ID of the airport you want.  Then, click ENTER twice, and, voila!

to plot direct courses, press the -D-> button..... then type in your destination

although i dont fly much that way... i find IFR way more realistic (as much as FS IFR can be, that is)

you can also use the NEAREST function of the GPS...  it shows you the airports that are nearest to you.... turn the outer knob (garmin 500) twice to the right and you will see the NRST page... then just choose your destination

FS9 (or FS2k2)GPS routes can also be plotted the old-fashioned way -- by hand using Notepad. Find coordinates by moving the aircraft icon in Mapview. Plot the initial course using GPS Direct then edit the file in Notepad (keeping waypoints sequential).

As I recall, this one is shipped with FS2002. I have crated dozens of flightplans using this method and they're kind of neat to fly; they are especially useful for plotting routes through mountain passes at low altitude.
