I think it'll be cool to add a video to one of the big screens in Meljet's 777's. Maybe a movie? Would it be possible at all? It would be interesting to watch...and would truly redefine long-haul in FS....just a thought.....

Even if it was possible, it would eat too much system resources.

If you have a dvd player on your computer, see how well your system and flight simulator performs if you fly while watching a DVD at the same time.

I've got my computer in the living room, in view of a nice tv, so i've got that sorted. I also have a little portable dvd player that I can watch while flying if I wanted to also

Yes. Simply link the *.wmv link to your kneeboard_keys.htm file and when click Window Media Player will open the video in the kneeboard.

Our crews do it all the time. We find the King's "How To Land" video very useful; especially, when viewed before reaching our destination :-)

The main problem with the kneeboard is that you can't minimize it without closing it, and it doesn't save your place either.

Don't think you can actually replace the screen with a vid as the actual links to the textures are in the .mdl file.

So if one made a new model, it would be possible?

in theory yes...

maybe there's a way to program a certain gauge file that could link to a module that would allow FS to do such a thing...

a problem would be that gauges displayed on the DVC refresh much slower than on 2d panel about 5-7 FPS, which is very slow for a movie.....

more trouble than it's worth IMHO (specially considering the resource hog that would be) :

This makes me wonder what flight crews actually do for most of the time, especially when flying these long-haul routes. Everything seems to be automatic these days but I sincerely hope they don't spend the flight watching videos on their laptops.

No, don't be silly- they have little portable DVD players!

You do have to wonder what they do- eventually you might run out of things to say to each other, unless you know a lot of jokes. Crossword puzzles, maybe? Or needlepoint?

I did hear from an airline pilot, (trust me!), that they do spend a lot of time during the flight knitting woolly jumpers, scarves, shawls etc, for their Dads, Children, Grandchildren, etc...
I mean....what else is there to do, sat on a seat in the cockpit of a passenger aeroplane for hours, wishing you were somewhere else, like in bed with a beautiful woman, and all you have is a set of knitting needles, a ball of wool, and a knitting pattern for a very long scarf....

...sod that, for a game of soldiers..  ;D...!

You are wrong on that. They have to be there on site to know what to do, climbs, avoidances, handoffs.
The only time they leave the cockpit is when they have to use the restroom. I have seen. They do a lot of chart work, watch the monitors engine stuff. But one thing they dont do is slack. What happens if the plane gets low EPR mid-flight? They are always watching, always busy, always something to do.  8)

Or chatting on the HF radio while riding the NATs...
But surely, those long hauls gets kinda boring, especially over open water.

Yes, there are some things to do: like filling in the upper winds, reporting AIREPS, talking to ATC, but it's not a busy cockpit over the atlantic in the middle of the night.
A short flight over central europe during peak hours...THAT'S busy!  ;D
