This may well have been covered before: if so, a reference to the thread[s] would be welcome. If not -

New computer, new copy of 2004, but very erratic. All too often, 'loading terrain' freezes at 10 - 12%. Discover Disc 4 scratched all round edge. Engineer diagnoses faulty CD unit. Another Disc 4 bought from Microsoft, and CD unit replaced. But problem still persists. Some days I can only get into 2004 via a particular airfield, other days by choosing Previous Flight, or one of the default 'select flights', or an add-on scenery. Every time I boot up it's a gamble. And when 2004 does work, switching to another arfield can make it freeze again.

Any clues will be most gratefully received. It's not overheating: stacks of fans. Nor lack of power: 550 PSU.

Sounds like a good system, you say it's new but are you sure all the drivers are compatible/up to date? The biggest cause of any system freeze/crash is faulty drivers.

OK ...... first a couple questions.
1. Is it a clean install of FS9 ..... ergo no addon planes/scenery etc?
2. Does this happen everytime you startup or only from certain airfields with certain aircraft.

If you have added anything then that could be the cause of your problems. Sometimes scenery, meshes and textures can cause confilicts as can aircraft gauges. If you have added anything then it may be a good idea to disable or uninstall it to see if the problem persists.
If it's a clean install then I'm stumped, it could be as already suggested ... It may also be worth deleting the FS9.cfg and starting the sim again so it builds a new one with the new disc.
To do this  you need to locate the CFG in

C:/documents and settings//Application Data (you may need to unhide hidden files)/Microsoft/FS9/FS9.CFG
Delete the CFG and a new one will be built next time you start the sim.

I concur with simonmd. In particular, MoBo buss drivers. Your description suggests display problems. I had an experience a few years ago where FS2002 simply would not run. It turned out to be the Mfr's MoBo drivers were not up to the demands of FS.

Check the Mfr of your North and South Bridge chips (probably VIA or nVidia). Check for updates from your MoBo maker and the chipset Mfr.
