Turbulence

Can you actually encounter turbulence when flying in FS9?  Or more specifically, if I do continuous steep turns, will I hit that bump at the end of them?

Yes, you do encounter turbulence ;)

Under what conditions?  Is it possible to set up weather conditions with turbulence, and then fly through?

I don't completely understand what you're asking, but you can either download real world weather, or set up your own custom weather and fly through it

I mean turbulence, as in the bumps in the air that can be found in the real-world.  Is there certain weather patterns that are more prone to having turbulence, or that will definitely contain turbulence?

Try near storms, hurricanes, etc.  Or near the jetstream.

Oh there is definately turbulence. Encountered it several times on my passenger flights.
However, after my experience in flying a real aircraft I can tell you the effect from the wind is not as profound as it is in real life.  :)

No, you won't encounter turbulence from your own wake -- that's expecting waaaayyyyyy too much from FS. However, you will encounter mild turbulence in and around clouds up to about 12,000 ft (and maybe higher).

I fly Milton Shupe's Dash 7 for a virtual airline. I always use VATSIM so my weather is continuously updated along my route. I normally fly 7,000 to 12,000 ft. It seems like most of the time I'm in and around clouds and there is almost always some turbulence.

I'm a real pilot but without the "feel" of the turbulence, it's difficult to tell just how realistic it is. I see what seems the right amount of airspeed fluctuations and there's some rocking in pitch and roll that the autopilot can't completely eliminate. Using these criteria, I think it's about as realistic as it can be.

One other thing you can do if you own a reigstered version of FSUIPC is to click on the weather tab and set random turblance in clouds. 8)

True!
I bet most people would not even know they were experiencing turbulence if they did not feel it. Of course if it was severe turbulence  :o

So I really don't think you are going to get a good "thud" under your seat unless you are flying a full motion simulator!  ;)

I've noticed that even using a default weather setting with turbulence turned off, I'll often hit a shear zone between air masses if I go far enough... a few seconds of yawing and maybe slight loss of altitude.
With turbulence enabled, it's very weird compared to RL- no sense of dropping or rising- but the instrument readings are similar.

Oh but innit true.

Nothing like trying to keep a heading and altitude and find your position in a 172 that drifts right every time you look down (we eventually found out the rudder tab was slightly bent) in moderate turbulence.

Moderate turbulence in a 172 mean you get hit by an invisible Mac truck every couple of seconds :P

And then, when you finally find the airport, literally flying SIDEWAYS in the pattern-love to replicate that in FS one day ;D

Speaking of drifting, abolutely ALL of my planes drift/roll left on takeoff and climb, and sometimes throughout cruise, even when my joystick is calibrated.  Any help?

I don't really care about turbulence in game, as you can't feel it. It's more of an annoyance when your screen is bouncing up and down, rather than it being fun, like in real life! ;D
