Hi, top of the day to all. Can someone explain to me how to do a GPS approch. I was cleared to land via GPS approch  to runway 30 in kingston jamaica on a foggy day. but have no clue how to execute that approch. any help please.

Open the GPS panel.

Click the waypoint button, it looks like a arrow through the letter 'D'

Enter the airport ID, in which the kingston jamaica airport code would be.

click the "ENT" button to load the airport

click the "ENT" button again to activate the route from current position to the airport (the GPS map should display with a pink line to the airport from the white plane in the middle)

click the "PROC" button

The "Select Approach" will be highlighted automatically since no approach is entered in before.

click the "ENT" button

select the runway in the list for the kingston jamaica airport.

Decrease the altitude incremetally using the altitude control on the panel (about 400ft/min will give approximately the same as the glideslope (approx. 3 degrees).

At what point should I do the vertical speed to -400 ft/min? At the V where the green ILS scope entry?

One more quick question can i load all this info into the gps before leaving the departure airport which is only 15mins away (montego bay jamaica)

Bruce, I just got off FS9 and found out you can pre-program the approach in the GPS.

Have the GPS with the waypoint to the airport programmed already at the depature airport by going this way:

press the "PROC" button

then press "ENT" button to go in the "select approach" menu

select the runway with the cursor knob (the big dial)

press "ENT"

now leave it at this, the approach is already programmed but not activated yet.

to get back to the map display, press "PROC" once

when you get within 15-30 miles of the airport, press "PROC"

then press "ENT" (the activate approach to final should be highlighted automatically, then press "ENT" again to activate the approach.

Volia!

So the problem is if your going to the airport and the approach is more than 90 degrees, the AP will try to turn the plane around and it will miss the approach since the AP doesn't turn the aircraft sharply as you could by hand flying it so it will end up going around and around in circles.

But if the wind changes from head to tail on the runway, then you would have to reprogram the GPS in flight

This will take you to the approach but you will have to control the altitude with the elevator.

Shouldn't that maybe say "..... control the altitude with the throttle"?

I always presumed that GPS approach was like flying a visual without using autopilot.

Also, never knew that the autopilot would perform a holding pattern on its own

Can't wait to try it  :).

That's for a C172 or similar.  I was talking about jets.
