I was browsing the site, the other day and realised that i didn't have a clue which were the best aircraft to download. Can everyone give me suggestions on what aircraft you fly in FS and which you think are made well.

I'm with Ozzy on that one, also David Maltby's VC10 is quite tasty.

I just have lots of fun browsing through all the well-known flight sim sites in my "Favourites" list until I find something which I might like to try out....
If it's good, I keep it, otherwise I just delete it, and try something else... ...!
....It's all a matter of luck, and every now and again, I find a little gem... ...!

Find out what type of flying you like and go from there

For me, knowing about all the high quality airliner packages won't do me any good because I never fly heavies.

I prefer flying warbirds, vintage, and GA aircraft, so I look for aircraft in those catagories

Rick Piper like Ozzy, Mike Stone's arn't the worst, FSKBT's, SGA............

Anything by Bill Lyons is excellent, aswell as Eric Dante's aircraft.

Anything by Paul Clawson. Any aircraft painted by Robert Hawk. All are Freeware that look better than Payware. Look here at Simviations Downloads FS2004 Vintage Page 3 . (1) Beechcraft G17S Staggerwing (2) P51 Mustang Racer Package  (3) P51 Historic Legends Package. (4) F4U1-A Corsair.  Just to name a few.

He does a cool Twotter aswell - just type 'Eric Dantes' in the file search for FS9 downloads.

Mike Stone's craft are excellent. They're easy, simple and fly excellently.

  Long Island Classic's Bellanca Scout is a fantastic GA aircraft.
First and formost it has a GREAT V.C. Secondly, it comes with a regular version, a ski version, a tundra version, and a float version. It can be found here on the FS2004 Props page 9.
  Also Long Island Classic's Bellanca Super Decathlon.
This is very similar to the scout, except it is built for aerobatic competition and training.
  The Decathlon can be found here as well on the FS2004 Props page 7.
  Both have realistic sounds and if you use TrackIR, the V.C.s in both are beautiful.
 

I like to download first of all what looks good. If it has a reasonable explanation and a mb size more the better. Those kind of files pass the first criteria-
Next I look at what I am up to with flight at the time, ie. whether I really need that cool looking whatever 'just now' or whether I could wait for an inoportune time, or just forget about-
Next I download the plane of most importance, regardless of d/l size ie. a plane of 30mb is all and well but do I want the plane now or latter, the plane with a 2mb d/l might just to the job for now, and viceversa.
One thing I always do is ask my fellow simmers what is the best DC-3, 737, prop, warbird, float- or as I did recently 'Rapide'- I quickly got a response and promptly d/l the as for mentioned.
The first thing I do before d/l anything is think about it.

One thing worth watching is the download amount in MBs - if it's very low, you'll probably find yourself with an aeroplane that looks fine from the outside, but only has a panel, sounds, and flying characteristics lifted straight from a default aircraft, and is no fun to fly. Conversely, if it's very high, you may find yourself with something that is so complicated that it slows the game down to a crawl.

Just found myself a beauty on Simviation - a Hawker Hurricane IIA, which takes me back to being a kid avidly reading books on the Battle of Britain. Flies like the single-seat fighter that it is, but - unlike a lot of 'military' downloads - behaves like a perfect lady on the approach.

The other thing that endears it to me is that it has a full handbook and some proper 'realism' built in - not just random failures, if you leave the cowl flaps closed in the early climb, or get the mixture too lean, it overheats and tells you in no uncertain terms that it is going to seize up if you don't mend your ways!

It's 'book' range is about 600nms. but you can stretch that to around 800 if you're careful with the revs and boost. Being
