VOR Display Problem

Hi,

Im having a problem with my VOR display.

I can tune either VOR receiver to the frequency of the VOR station I want to navigate to e.g. 109.40 - But my VOR display needle wont appear to swing to the course of the station. The Flag also appears as off.

Ive set the system to NAV not GPS and I get the digital readout of the distance to the VOR station - Its just the display that wont work.

This is in the default Cesna 172 - I hav't tried any other planes yet...

Anyone got any suggestions? :(

Thanks! :)

Are you receiving the Morse Code ID for the VOR in question?

What is your range from the VOR when you don't receive / hear it?

Vor's have limited ranges.  A lot of the range has to do with aircraft altitude................ in general the higher the firther away your receiver can pick it up.

best,

...............john

I cant recall hearing the morse for the VOR station I used... are they always active?

I was at about 7 thousand ft with a good 26NM distance from the VOR when I tuned to its frequency, but I still didnt seem to get any response from the VOR display... :(

There is a button to turn ID ident on for the nav radio(s).

Is it all VORs ?

There are three types of VOR..

High-altitude (up 200 nm range)

Low altitude (up to 60 nm range)

edzmen - I think that you're mixing the VOR up with the RDF (Radio Direction Finder).

With the VOR, you rotate the dial (button marked 'OBS') until the dial shows the course on which you want to approach the VOR; the instrument will then fly you to that course and follow it. Just make sure that you have 'NAV' and not 'HDG' set on the autopilot.

If you want to fly straight to the VOR, just turn the instrument until the vertical line on the instrument is straight up. The only thing to be careful of is not to set the 'back bearing'; make sure your direction is roughly right or the VOR will start flying you AWAY from the station (it's designed to be able do that too if you want it to :)).

On the Cessna I don't think the 'flag' is relevant to the VOR; I think it refers to the ILS Glideslope, which appears on the same dial when you're tuned in to the ILS.

Sounds a bit complicated but you'll soon get the hang. Full instructions, info, and photos etc. in the 'Learning Centre', under 'VOR, Using'.

There's a possibility that the VOR you have selected, is a DME only station. These ones will give you a distance reading, which you said you're getting, but no directional reading. They are depicted on the map as a blue square whereas the VOR is a blue square with a hexagon inside.
