Shimmer and Shake

Postby Phiz » Mon Oct 03, 2005 3:11 pm

Hot new computer, graphics superb - but still the maddening  distraction of shimmering trees. Can anyone suggest a remedy, or which Display setting is especially relevant. I've juggled with them all, but not much luck.

Phiz,

Try turning MIP Mapping in the sim Settings down to 4 or less.  Oh... and welcome to SimV.

best,

Welcome to Simviation. 8)
As an added tip, play around with your graphics card settings. Never leave them as they come. If you wish ask someone who has your card in the hardware forum to post a couple of screenies of the settings so that you don't have to spend hours testing each and every change out. ;)

Yeah, it's all top of the line other than that 6800GT, it's way good, but that new 7800, holy crap.

I'd already spent the kids' inheritance on that machine - to specify the 7800, I'd have had to trade in my wife. :o

Thanks John.  I have a new system that compared to the old one is AWESOME so naturally I turned all of the settings to maximum and was disapointed to see the shimmer mentioned.

With mipmaps at 4 the sim is nice and smooth with FPS of 30 - 75 and there is no shimmer.

;D

Ah...I was just experimenting with this problem a few days ago and i found that for my graphics card (9800 pro) you can have a mip map of 7 without blurs by going into the graphics cards settings and setting both Anti-Ailiasing and Anisotropic Filtering to 4x on slower machines this would probably slow the sim down but it should be fine on your computer...Oh and make sure you uncheck the anti ailiasing box in the displays setting in flight simulator. ( If you don't understand what I mean feel free to ask and I can post some screenshots for you, tell me if it worked anyway because if it works on my computer it might not work on yours and i'm wanting to see if that helps.)  8)

I had this problem licked on my old machine, so I've used the same settings on the fancy new one. Including AA at 4 and AF at 8, mipmap at 4 , which works best for me. But I still get the shimmers. Least obtrusive with weather set to Fall. I begin to wonder whether a factor could  be the new LCD monitor. Hit Pause for a screenshot, and no shimmer: great picture. Release Pause, shimmer again ...could it be all those pixels? Is there an expert on LCD/TFT monitors out there? ???

I doubt if its the monitor because this seems to happen to quite a few people. Try changing your anit-ailiasing and anistropic filtering levels around a bit and you should be able to stop the shimmering

I find on my system any MIP setting above 4 or 5 produces the shimmering effect you are describing

I owe you a beer. Shuffled around in the Nvidia panel, and eventually found that reducing AF to 8 and bumping mipmap up to 7 produced the best result yet - ie, a degree of shimmer I can live with. Thanks a lot, Wealthysoup. [Intriguing pseudonym.    How come?]
