Let's say you download an add on file, we will call our "demonstration" zip file "Vancouver05.zip"
Unzip it and inside you will find another folder (most of the time) called lets say, "Vancouver05". What this file will be adding is scenery in & around the Vancouver area.

Now inside this folder there should be 2 sub folders, Scenery & texture.

If this is the case, copy & paste the entire folder called "Vancouver05" and put it in you "add on" folder in your FS9 root folder.

Open up the sim:
Go to Settings/scenery library. You will see all the scenery add ons that come default with the sim.

Now click "Add area"

The FS9 Root folder will appear and you will see your "addon Folder" ! Now double click your"add on" folder. You will see anyhting that you have added. In your case, you may only just see "Scenery & Texture".
Leave these alone.

Look for the file we were just demonstrating called " vancouver05".

Click once on that and you will See it appear in your scenery library window at the top.

Click OK and EXIT OUT OF THE SIM.

Restart the sim and it will add the scenery add on to the library and now go fly it in the sim!

On a side note:::
Sometimes an add on will not have both the "Scenery" & "Texture" folders inside. They might only have a scenery file, this is OK, just add it the same.
Also there are sometimes documents & images in here

Also, you can "turn on & off" these sceneries by going into settings/scenery library then "un-check" the file you do not want to load.

This is a personal preference thing when you start to accumulate many different add ons. But for now, just do what I mentioned above and you should be fine!

just to clarify,

Any new scenery that I have goes in the root addon scenery folder.  for ex.  fs9/addon scenery/new stuff.

in newstuff is /scenery and tecture folders.

since fs9/addon scenery is already an added area does it automatically ad addon scenery/new stuff when i start the sim or do I have to go and add the /new stuff manually?

To me this is redundant because the contents of the addon scenery folder should get loaded when the sim starts.

Also, after I add /new stuff when I start the sim it says please wait while FS builds a new data base for the scenery.

To me that sounds like its already added and activated it.  When I go and ad the /new stuff area and restart the sim it tells me to wait while it builds a data base.

It sounds like it is adding the area again.  This doesn't seem to cause any problem and I can see my new scenery but It just seems redundant and creating unecessary data bases.

could you clarify some more?

No....

Only the contents that have been "activated"...
To verify this, add a new scenery folder to "addon scenery"
then start the sim. Go to the area where the new scenery
supposedly exists. Note what you see.
Now activate the new scenery..."add area", restart FS9.

Go back to the same area as before and note the differences.

You do need to avtivate each area ( sub-folder ) added to the
addon scenery folder before it will be used by FS9.

You are over-analyzing the process. Just follow the stated
procedure and tell yourself "It is what it is!" and go on from
there....

If you have successfully added the scenery, you will note that when the sim fires up, a black bar will go across the screen saying,

You might like to read my Scenery Clinic. http://www.simviation.com/lair/fs2004sc.htm
This is the method I've used to install 3rd party scenery to all my M$ sims since FS98. It works just as well now as it always did.

PS. We were using an Addon scenery folder in FS/CFS long before the guys at M$ thought of the idea.

Indeed I was.  I have DL the Juliana, alaska oil rigs, BFU stuff, seaplane bases.  I am really enjoying it and am begining to understad how the scenery files work with in the game.

I did notice something with the juliana scenery.  I noticed that the runway and taxiway textures I installed do not show up in the addon scenery.  I looked in the juliana texture folder and did not see any referance to the texture files I installed.

If I were to rename the new textures to the name used in the juliana scenery would it show my new testures?

The textures I DL are in the FS9/texture folder and are call taxiwaytexture and runwaytexture or something to that effect.  they are the same name as the default textures so that they overwrite the defaults.  In the juliana/texture folder there is no file named like those above but there is a files that deal with taxiway and runway texture(i can't recall their name).

I guess my question would be is FS using the taxi and rwy texture files in the juliana/texure vice the ones in the FS9/texture folder?

And if i made a copy of and changed the name of the new texture files in FS9/texture to the same name as what is in the juliana/texture folder and pasted the renamed files in the juliana/texture folder would they display the taxi and rwy texture i want?

to me it sounds like that would work but i am still learning this scenery thing.

Can you give me a link to the page this scenery is posted on so I can check it out. Failing that tell me the exact page number.

I'm always very wary of overwriting default files. This should not be necessary with new airports or updates to the defaults. If you do this please take backup copies of the originals first. Then at least you can go back if you have problems.
