im in the middle of a lesson with rod whatshisname. can anyone tell me how to trim the aircraft for the climb and descent rate lesson.

There is the trim wheel located in the panel of most aircraft. If there isn't go to the keyboard commands and select trim and find the buttons and assign them to your stick.

To change your trim assignment go to Settings, Assignments and then here:

Turn off the numlock, and use the 7 to trim the aircraft down and the 1 to trim the aircraft up.  Trim it until you don't have to use any pressure on the stick in order to maintain your flight attitude

i kno where the trim wheel is but i dont kno what to do with it when he sais trim the aircraft.

For "straight and level" flight, you adjust trim to keep the plane from climbing or diving.  Subtle movements of the trim control get the 'attitude" of the plane (hence the attack angle of the wing and the lift generated) correct for the given throttle power setting to maintain a level flight.

It takes some practice.

The trim controls the aircraft's going up or down.
So to make the aircraft go up you can:
1) Push the stick down and the aircraft points down.
2) Trim down and the aircraft points down.

And the opposite for "up"!

Now you may say, Why on earth have trim then if I can use the stick?
Well it is an essential and important extra to flying. if you are climbing to 4,000, for example after take-off, you are going to have to hold that stick for a real long time in that position and it is hard work. If you use trim you can release pressue onthe stick and the aircraft will climb. You can actually fly the aircraft in the air by the trim wheel. It can be used to fly straight (can be hard to do if you aren't used to it!) or used to ascend or descend.
