when i was a toddler, i used to play FS4.0 on a laptop using just the keyboard... i crashed a LOT back then... in part because i was like 9... but i think it was mostly the keyboard

it amazes me nowadays how i sometimes was able to actually land using the arrow keys, i wouldn't even dare to try now (especially when i know i can use the autopilot to land without touching the keys)
nonetheless it's good training.... when i first picked up a joystick to play FS i thought, hey, this is so much easier

you don't need a very good joystick to play FS though, even a $10 2axis/4 buttons stick will do the job (to an extent)
i use a MS force feedback pro 1.0... i like having 9 buttons and 4 axis, i also have a yoke type thing which i modified to add an external throttle quadrant i built... i don't use it much though, as the throttle doesn't hold itself together too well
