Hiya everyone,

I have a C.P. Technologies Inc. RADEON 9200SE graphics card.

On flight simulator, i can achieve frame rates of between 6-12 fps. To increase this level, if i just bought a new graphics card - would this solve the problem.

When i press shift+z, it says the fps is locked at 20fps. WOuld this be increased with a better graphics card?

Basically, what i am looking for is better fps and better graphics for fs. Can this be achieved with a new graphics card and are they easy to install for a bit of a novice about hardware?  :)

Go to the display setting, then raise the slider on FS Lock...

If its always in the 12-15 frame range it wouldn't matter if you increased the frame lock in the game settings.

Mine usually runs under 30 frames alone in the air but will drop to 3-6 in a crowded airport.

I have tweaked and tweaked till the point I'm burnt out on tweaking to try to improve it. You can increase the frames by dropping the graphics quality of the game so its constantly a battle between the game running faster or running the game with better looks.

I perfer going the route of looks so I try not to get irritated when its lagging and gittery because I have scenery and traffic maxed  :)

To answer your question, go get the best money can buy in RAM and the latest video card and it will definately give you the best of both worlds.

Ahhhhhh.... the REAL issue with fs2004....... what it takes to run it to the expectations created on the box.

Check around this forum (and maybe Hardware) for ALL the numerous threads dealing with framerates.  This is the most discussed topic on this program, I think  ;).

Bottom line........ at least from my point of view....... this sim taxes not ONLY the graphics card and the the AGP pipeline, but also the CPU, the RAM, and the front side buss speed.  Fixing only one can improve things... but usually not by the amount that the user expects if the rest of the system is not "up to" the new component.

As to getting better performance by "turing things off or down"........ well... why did you buy the sim with the features you are now turning off  ;) ?

Look at my specs on the trailer.... and I still have "issues".

I stuck with FS2002 until a couple of months ago, because I thought my system wouldn't handle FS9 (2gHz, 512mB RAM, Radeon 9200SE - like you, rich1241) but when I picked FS9 up for next to nothing in Philadelphia, I was astonished at how well it runs - better than FS2002 on my system. Even at high-intensity airports like KLAX or Heathrow, my FPS is 9-12 with detail up on high. One thing that does work is to turn down the cloud density to around 60%.
