From http://www.futureshuttle.com/shuttle2.html

"If necessary, the Shuttle can make an emergency landing in Ben Guerir, Morocco; Moron and Zaragosa, Spain; and Banjul in The Gambia. The stateside sites are at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and White Sands, New Mexico. "

In recent years, the Cape Canaverall landing site has been the most used.

Another alt site is supposed to be Lakenheath AFB (IIRC) in England, but I don't think I'd ever want to try land a shuttle there :P

I'm fairly sure the only shuttle (emergency) landing sites in the UK were either Manston or Woodbrigde, with their 750ft wide runways and maybe Fairford. I'll check it out. If they were I think they were stood down in the mid 90s...

[edit]Fairford was the only UK site that appears to have officially been used as a launch diversion airfield in the UK, although Manston was also earmarked for potential use. These appear to be the only 2 in the UK.

The only 2 in Europe now a Zaragoza in Spain and Istres (16000ft runway) in France...
