1. ALWAYS know where your landing site is. If you're flying an airliner cross country for instance, note several alternate airports along your route - their ICAO's, VOR's, ILS's etc. so you can turn immediately to reach them.
2. When a failure occurs, get the nose down IMMEDIATELY. Trim the aircraft for a safe glide comfortably - but not too far - above stall speed. (e.g. stall for the FS9 737 is 142kias. I'll trim for 180; to get maximum range.)
3. Altitude is money - don't spend it too quickly. Hoard it - spend just enough to keep you airborne. In other words; if you see a likely-looking airport close by; DON'T dive for it - you waste altitude and build up speed you can't use. Use the altitude you have to plan and establish a long straight-in or base entry approach to the runway of your choice. Remember to check the wind - you need to land into the wind; very critical now. (As opposed to a lot of simflight; where folks land in any direction they want.) You don't have power to pull you out of trouble now; so be sure of your approach.
4. Altitude determines approach. If you approach high enough; you will be able to drop flaps and gear and maintain airspeed. (Remember; with the increased drag you'll be going down a lot faster in order to maintain airspeed.) If you're coming in low - i.e. along the glideslope - wait to drop gear and flaps until the last minute. I don't recommend this - things happen too fast that close to the ground.
5. Fly the aircraft onto the runway. With enough practice you will be able to flare/settle like a normal landing; but unless you have that skill; fly her down. You MUST touch down right on the numbers (depending on runway length) or you won't have enough room to stop.
6. Upon touchdown; drop everything - flaps to full; spoilers out, stick a hand out the window.

Your puny brakes will need all the help they can get to stop your aircraft.
These are FS9 guidelines only - real procedures are very different. (and I can only speak for GA anyway - haven't a clue about real heavies.

)
Hope this helps.
