Selecting Fuel Tanks and Crossfeeding

I know I've read this before but can't find an answer from a search.

First of all, here's what I'm doing...

I'm programming GFDisplay by Pete Dowson. I have three GoFlight buttons assigned via FSUIPC to allow me to select the Left tank, All tanks or the Right tank.

Now this is why I'm posting here...
While using the FA-18E, I get the proper values from the memory offsets. 2 for left, 1 for all and 3 for right.
I assume if I select the left tank, both engines feed off of it. Right?

Then where does the cross feed come into play?
Under the same button assignments in the Lear45, selecting the left tank, returns the value of 14 which is crossfeed from left to right. This tells me I'm feeding fuel into the right tank for the right engine to use. But when I select the right tank, I'm not crossfeeding from right to left. Is this just a glitch?

Would someone please explain again selecting a tank verses crossfeeding?

Okay selecting a tank means that the engine feeds exclusively from that tank.
Crossfeeding is when you transfer from fuel from one tank to another to help maintain trim and balance. This is important on heavies....

I've also heard that feeding the right engine from the left tank was called crossfeeding. Thanks for clarifying.

Just wanted to add somehting: "Crossfeeding" is indeed when an engine is fed from the opposite fueltank.
However, fuel balance is accomplished by opening the crossfeed valves aswell, and by turning off the fuel pump switches for the fuel tank that has the lowest fuel quantity.
So I guess the phrase can be expressed in either way  :)
