Jot it down as they're saying it, and then ask them to repeat anything you miss.  If you explain early in the session that you're new, they'll go a little easier on you. ;)

Most "real world" pilots have developed a sort of "short hand" for copying clearances. It commonly uses single letters or symbols to replace the common words used, but there is no real "standard".  Once you get used to it, copying a clearance is fairly easy, and you have written to refer back to.

What gr says is correct, use shortend words, also with todays ever mordern world alot of clearances are now done through computers printed out to the pilot and they confirm it through the FMC. This is how United do it with their 777's and possibly other aircraft.

I use shorthand:

This....
"N310PG is cleared as filed direct 42A, climb and maintain 4000, expect 10,000 15 minutes after departure, sqawk 3124, contact tower on 118.50."

Is turned into this:

"D-->42A    ^040, 100 @ 15, 3124, T-118.5"

EDIT: And throw the void time in there if you wish, I forgot it...

Yeah I do something similar.

I write something like this before he speaks:

climb _____ Expect _____    __ mintues after departure.

Frequency_____

Squawk_______

I spent literally years desperately scribbling notes; it's even worse when you get your landing clearance.

Then I found out that if you click on 'Aircraft/Kneeboard/Radio', all your ATC messages are printed out on there.

It really IS as simple as that. :)

Unless its a real person acting as ATC like on Vatsim. I would love to get broadband so I could do multiplayer and fly on vatsim.

It takes getting used to. By all means use shorthand, and of course, ask to hear it again. Nobody's going to say "sorry, already told you"...

I fly Vatsim on dialup and it's fine mostly.

Also, the controllers are fantastic.
