Dark runways

I am trying to circumnavigate the globe in a Panavia Tornado which requires quite a few refueling stops enroute (I can't air to air refuel yet).

Now when I call in to land at an airport. The ATC tells me to land on runway X or Y  but it is pitch black. Is there any way I can get them to turn the lights on?

what kind of runways are you landing on? big airports or small fields? some smaller runways don't have lights as far as i know (or am i wrong ???)

When I can I use large international airports. I tend to think that the small airfields might not have the capability of being lit up.

I find that most airports with ILS capability have lights, This isnt always true, but get FSnav.... It says if it has lights etc (I think It does) and gives all the frequencies you'll ever need. or just guess wich runways have lights or not, I believe your GPS in defualt FS says in a way that the runway has ILS, Lights, International etc etc. I havent Tried GPS stuff like that in a while.... Hope this helps (I may be completely mistaken too so correct me if I'm wrong) Cheers, Gunny04

You can also determine whether or not it has lights through the GPS module, in the info section.  It's kind of hard to explain how to get there in words, just go to the fs9 learning center ;)

Thanks for the input chaps - but in one particular hop I was directed to come in on runway X (06) which was dark while runway Y (09) was lighted. does that make sense?

1) you do realise runways are 'named' after their (rough) headings? runway 6 will have a heading of about 060, runway 18 - 180 etc so if you can see runway 6, then u know where about (roughly) runway 9 will be

2) if you play at night, turn your room lights off, your panel lights of and you should be able to make it out, works for me when I want to see details at night

3) change the time of day for a second on your final approach then change it back and see how close you are ;)

Yes I appreciate the runway number refers to the heading  ;D but I was directed by the ATC to land on the dark runway and not the lighted one.

I did actually make a good landing, I just think it odd to be directed away from the lit runway

....I'd have ignored ATC and landed on the lit runway for the "Safety of my Passengers"....I do believe the captain has the final say on matters of safety..........or maybe somone knows different....commoner ;)
