Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes(STARs). I'm not even going to try on this one, someone like Saratoga or Nexus would be more qualified to fill you in here.

The best way to describe SIDS and STARS is think of them like bus routes, except they are in the air instead of the ground. You fly to a certain point, either VOR, Intersection, or other waypoint upon departure or arrival ;D

If you want to fly as in the realworld (IFR) then you should always fly a SID and Star if possible.
When you file your flightplan you file for a particular SID(departure) from the active runway. So your flightplan to depart EGGP (Liverpool Rwy27) may read something like NANTI2T L10 HON ....etc.
this means you will depart rwy27 via NANTI2T Departure then follow airway L10 to

It's easy for me to do either. I just go into the page on my FMC and the choices pop up on the left LSK's. I press the one I want and bingo, into the route page it goes and whether I let george do it all or I do it with the yoke or heading dial it's right there on my HSI. Just follow that little line. Of course, I have done it using nothing but vor, dme, ndb and my charts just to be sure I can.

I had a big problem with all that airliner mumbo jumbo, STARS, SIDS and much more. it took me 3 flight dictionaries and 20 tries on a test to get them right :(
