Why do we Fly?

Postby crocker » Thu Mar 03, 2005 4:30 pm

I've been a flight simmer since '98 and often wondered to myself, why do I do this? And more importantly why do thousands of other people of all ages around the world take up flight simming. Is it just the buzz of believing you're actually up there at 30k, free as a bird so to speak, do we just want to escape from day to day problems, do we dream of being a real pilot one day or has that dream past us by somewhere along the line and we're simply trying to re-live what could have been? What brings some us to the point of divorce with this hobby because we spend so much time flying and downloading to make it as real as we can get it. I have other hobbies but none takes up so much of my time on a weekly basis as flight simming.  Or could it be the technical challenges of flying, learning about the principles of flight and navigation. Personally, I guess it's a combination of all of these things, for me anyway.
What are your thoughts on this addicitive pastime of ours and is there any escape!!! ;)

I have always wanted to fly, so the sim is like a quick fix I guess. Im going to start learning to fly for real this summer, then I will use FS for practice. Honestly, I never would have gotten this interested in FS if I didnt work the midnight shift, wich leaves me with nothing to do when I get off of work at 12:00 AM.

Even in this modern day and age, the eternal allure of aviation is still around-we may not be in the glory days anymore, where someone would give their left arm to get an autograph from a pilot, but the simple unexplainable desire is still there.  Some people don't get it, but that's their problem.  I believe the quote on my sig are the truest words ever spoken. :P

EDIT: Oh yeah, not the one about the french people.  The one below!

I've always been interested in aviation, since i live near how many airports? ;D

anyway, I loved aviation, and Flight sim nutures that passion. I'm taking it a step at a time though, first my driving license, which i do say, give a lot more freedom of movement (and to quit bugging my mom for a ride). a PPL is in the future after i finish A. High school and B. college.

it's just a passion, because most people don't have $130,000 for a plane and $20,000 for lessons. $50 almost does what $150,000 can do. I wouldn't pass it up, would you?

I fly for the satisfying feeling that you get when you step off of earth so to speak, the rising sensation that uplifts your spirits and stomach...and not to mention the raw power of making the passengers scream even over little things. Also that satisfied feelings when [glb]You[/glb] land the plane. As for the free thing yes!!!!, being in the sky and the other place guys like to me ;) ;D are the onli things that make me happy.
Future pilot...so you can scream to god, he cant hear you

I fly the sims because [in a way] it's a new frontier. A new Wild West [without the infamous villans] that we all live on. And in this wild west, we pick a land and build a society upon it. And just like gold and cold beer, addons are cherished here. ;)

There are infamouse villans. Freeware pirates like that guy in columbia who was selling freeware on his website. Theres another guy too (and countless more Im sure) who does that, but I dont remember his name or website.

Ha, my wife loves to watch all those so called soap operas like As the world turns and the rest of that sh*t, so when she is watching that I have some time to fly. Put on my headphones, start FS9 and leave the television for what it is.

So true. ;D
