Anti-aliasing problems

Postby JonVic » Sun Feb 27, 2005 11:22 am

I am finding that i have some weird issues with anti-aliasing with FS2004. Basically as soon as i enable anti-aliasing when i load a flight and the loading bar comes up the screen flickers lots and as soon as the cockpit shows up when the scenery has loaded then it flickers too for 1-2 seconds. I tried setting my gfx card to 2x anti-aliasing to sort the problem and it makes it worse so i have set it back to 'application controlled'! Anyone know why this happens? I have a FX5900XT nvidia card it occurs with all forceware drivers and official nvidia drivers i have tried, im stumped!

One, don't use the in-game AA, use your card. Your card was built to handle these tasks better and much more proficiently.

Try not to use Application preference, use your own custom settings. You will have to play with the settings to see what works best for you. Sometimes turning down Hardware Acceleration one notch can fix many problems IF all else fails.

thanks for your reply but i am having no luck. I have disabled the in-game AA and set my card to 2x i have also set antiostropic filtering to 2x and to 'application controlled' and it has made no difference, i tried turning down the hardware acceleration and it screwed the menus up loads so had to go back to full acceleration. I am completely confused i just dont get why i have this problem it seems FS2004 cannot run AA even when it is set on my card and disabled in-game, its crazy :(

edit: i have also noticed that if i run the game not in full screen but as a window within windowsXP then it doesnt do this with AA set at 2x. Surely then others must have experinced this, because i diont think it is a fault of my hardware and it is not drivers because all the drivers do the same so surely all you nvidia users must get this too...?

I have the same card as you but don't have this problem.  What are your other specs?  I am currently using the Omega 1.677 Nvidia drivers with performance checked.  Make sure your mip-mapping is set at 4.  I have anti-aliasing set at 2X on the card and application controlling antistropic filtering.  If you decide to change drivers make sure you use Driver cleaner to get rid of any leftover bits from old drivers.

I am running the game with the same settings as you, which i dont understand!

My specs are:

AMD Sempron 3000+
512mb DDR RAM
128mb FX5900XT GFX Card
Soltek SL-KT600-C1L Motherboard

Windows XP Professional SP1

I have tried omega drivers, Forceware drivers, and official Nvidia ones and it is always the same, guess im screwed i just dont get this :(

edit: another user over at another forum has just posted and said that they get the same problems as me, this is really weird.....

Thing is does it flicker once its all loaded?

My 6800Ultra does some weird stuff when loading, I get funny coloured screen somtimes, though seems to not be as frequent now.

If the problem persists, try running dx diagnostics to make sure DX is fine and Direct 3 D. Hopefully you are running DX 9.0b or c.

START/RUN....type in dxdiag and then hit OK. Run all the tests and note if it reports any problems.

One time I was having some funny problems, nothing major, and ran dxdiag. to find that somehow, my Direct 3D was disabled!!! Reinstalling my vid card drivers fixed it up.

You can always revert back to older drivers for your card. This has fixed many problems for others. You should also check your cards manufacturers site for any updates to cards bios and/or drivers.

Hi there,

as allready mentioned you should reinstall your drivers btw. install the newest drivers from nvidia directly (not from your card vendor).

I have tried many drivers with my card and none stop this problem even using the detonator deleter.

However i have made a discovery. I decided to dig out my old GeForce2 card to see if that would tell me if it was a card, driver, or motherboard issue. It appears that it is not drivers or motherboard but my actual card.

I installed the omega drivers (version16177) and even with AA on 2 or 4x and with the antiostropic filtering on it does not flicker at all. So i guess it is my actual card. Another user on another forum has told me that he experienced this problem when he upgraded to a newer nvidia card but when he upgraded his motherboard the problem resolved itself.

So either my card is faulty or is not compatable with my motherboard when playing FS2004. Whatever i think i will be exchanging this card for a Radeon 9800 pro as i have other issues with this card and the latest nvidia drivers that i am not happy about.

The only thing is i will be using my GF2 card until the new one arrives but the only thing that is weird is with the GF2 card my 2d cockpits are always really large like the screenshot below, i have re-installed the game but they are still like this and were not like this with the FX5900 any ideas? (i am running 1024x768 so its not the resolution and all sliders are maxed out as well)

I would say that is a driver issue!  You may need to roll back to much older drivers for that card.

well i have discovered that actually that problem with the large cockpit dials as shown is due AGAIN! to AA with this older card, the minute i switch AA off in the game or on the card it is solved! So that is 2 issues that are completely different with 2 seperate cards both related to AA and FS2004.
It also is a semi-driver issue because if i roll back to older drivers the 2D cockpit does not even show up just a black space when AA is on! Jeez i have never down grief like this with a game what is up with FS2004 and AA (and my stupid PC) i am thinking this must be due to my new motherboard i cant see what else due to the fact i have tried 2 cards and they have both had AA issues with this game (albeit different problems!)

I actually might be able to help someone out this time.

I have this problem quite often actually. My solution is hit ALT, Aircraft, Select Aircraft then pick whatever you are going to fly. Even if it is the same plane. Problem solved.

Works for my anyways,

Hi there,

just a wild theory. but could this be a Flightsim bug ?
Because. Antialising works by scaling the image to
double or quad size and than recalculate it back
with interpolation. Like in photoshop when you downsize
an image with bicubic interpolation it gets anti aliased.
It looks like the 2d elements are not properly rescaled
again.
I rarely had this bug with my geforce 6600, too. But it could
always be solved by restarting my flightsim.

My friend has just got a 6600GT and is having a few issues with Anti-Aliasing too.  Hopefully newer drivers will solve his problem though.  He gets a small amount of flickering when its turned on.
