waves out of control

ok everybody, i got a little problem here ;D

the waves in my sim are going berserk (not the ones on the open ocean, the ones that break on the shore). they use to break slowly, which looked reasonably realistic. now they break with high speed which looks cr*p! :(

i can't remember when it changed, or if it occured after installing a certain addon. i just wanted to ask if somebody else has this high speed shorebreak ;D and if somebody knows if there's a way to make them break slower (maybe changing stuff in the fs9.cfg or something ???)

anyway, would be nice if somebody could help me out here :)

thanks,
yurei

You're probably going to need to outline what addon wave program you're using.

I downloaded one recently but when I read the "read-me text" realised that my gear wasn't up to the required specs for video card etc.

I've found the wave programs a bit of a worry, another previous installation made the water look like ink.

If you use windows XP or ME try a system restore to go back before you made any changes. Or just reinstll the default effects files I think that is where the wave files are kept but it might be the textures not sure.
I hope you did not unzip straight into FS. If you did lots of luck. I know a lot of people do this and some readme files also tell you do this. I hate to keep repeating myself but NEVER NEVER unzip anything into FS. It can create all kinds of problems, like the one you are having now.
Oh by the way you might want to check out your contrails they probably are changed as well.

yes it's difficult to find the right water textures. i went through a few and was never completely happy with them. the one i'm using at the moment is this one: http://www.simviation.com/fs2004scenery11.htm and it is the first one i am very happy with. i don't think it's a  videocard problem, i have a radeon 9800 pro and the waves do look like they should on the open sea, it's just the speed of the shorebreak  :(

i tried using the original wave effect files, but it made no difference  :(. i don't unzip straight into fs and i always back up everything (sometimes more than necessary ;)) but as u said, maybe it's the textures. although i do remember that the waves were already screwed up with the last water textures installed. the contrails didn't change.

thanks for the help guys, i hope i can figure this out. but the good thing is, at least its nothing major. if it's not fixable then i guess i have to get used to seeing fast breaking waves, it sure won't stop me flying ;D

Yurei..I just got over a very similar problem The waves breaking on the shore appeared as rectangular blocks moving up and down. I have a super fast comp/vid card, so it wasn't a texture add-on compatibility issue. I'm using XP. Here's what I did to fix it...I did a complete reinstall of fs2004. It worked like a dream. I still use the same water texture add-on, but not a hint of a problem. If you try it, let us know if it worked for you too.

hi clipper  :),

a complete reinstall? :o
i always tried to avoid having to do that because it's going to be hard work getting all the addons back in place...but now that you mention it, maybe that's the best thing to do. probably a good idea to make everything fresh again and get rid of old stuff that i never use while i'm at it.
i will see if i find enough time tomorrow to do it and let you know about the result :)

Have a look at this forum chat....it helped me solve a similar problem.

http://www.visualflight.co.uk/forums/to ... 78&%239726

In the end I had to replace texture files from my disk.

Best of luck

Yurei, I hope you see this in time, you can save all your add-ons while in the process of a re-install of FS9. Just click "yes" when prompted to save specific files in the process.
