Advice needed please

Hi.
FS9 isn't saving some settings anymore
When I give the keyboard a new assignment and/or set the realism to high or custom, it's fine for that session, but it loses the settings when I exit FS and I have to reconfigure everything when I restart the sim. Also I can't change the default flight anymore and every time that I exit FS9 a window appears asking if I want to report a fault to Microsoft.
Has anybody any idea what has gone wrong?
Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks..Alan

Hi Alan. I'm almost certain I've seen this mentioned before but I can't think what the answer was, if there was one.
The first thing I would try is to find fs9.cfg & delete it. It won't do any harm & this simple tweak has been known to fix all sorts of weird problems with FS9. If you're nervous about trying it, rename fs9.cfg to fs9.bak instead of deleting it. This will have the same effect.

Thanks Hagar.
I'll try that and see how it goes.

Hi. No change after deleting the fs9.cfg. ??? Unless anyone has any other ideas it looks like I will have to uninstall FS9 and reinstall it!. The problem is, that I have dozens of add-on aircraft and would like to avoid manually reinstalling each one. If I save the folders "aircraft" "guages" and "effects" from the main FS9 folder before deleting it can I just load them back into the new FS9 or is it more complicated than that?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards....Alan.

"I will have to uninstall FS9 and reinstall it!"
I wouldn't do this yet
fs9.cfg was the obvious fix but there's other issues (you report)
do you have the FS9.1 patch?
what did you add last before experiencing the proplem?
it's a *.bgl somewhere and your assignment -- should you choose to accept it -- is to find out which one. my best guess is it's an addon scenery file

p.s. after each change made, delete the fs9.cfg and let FS9 build a new one without the previous errors in it.

O.K., no more Mr. Niceguy . . . we have to get to serious about this:
the FS9.1 patch fixed two of FS9's major shortcomings:
1.) the "seasonal glitch"
and
2.) Addon scenery glitch (FS9 utilizing only a finite number of scenery textures)
1.a) If 'spring' season was selected in certain areas, FS9 would CTD (Crash-to-Desktop)
2.a) Even with my robust (it's great!) system, FS9 would CTD (Crash-to-Desktop) when certain addon sceneries (which exceeded the texture limit on FS9) were encounted; either i flew into them or selected them; either way, the sim would crash before the FS9.1 patch
There's another FS9 glitch to be aware of and that is the Logbook; if you are experiencing FS9 (or FS9.1) CTD (Crash-to-Desktop) DO NOT USE FS9 LOGBOOK . . . it's more trouble than it's worth.
I have not had one CTD since I unchecked and stopped using the FS9 Logbook

Hi Matt Thanks for your input. Yes, it did occur to me that an aircraft or a guage I had installed might be causing the problem

But I have no way of finding out!!!! Do I have to save any other files apart from the ones I have mentioned? I have discs for all my payware a/c so reloading them won't be a problem, it's all the freeware stuff that I am not sure about
Regards.................Alan

Hi Matt. I already have flightsim manager installed but I don't use it much! it always says it is missing a guage or something so I prefer to load things manually, this is why I asked wether I could save the files mentioned earlier and just reload the whole bunch into the reinstalled FS9. Basically I am trying to find a way to avoid manually reloading 70 or 80 aircraft from my zip files after I have deleted and reinstalled FS9. Thanks again for your help.................Alan

alanmus, normally a re-install doesn't delete your downloads and add-ons - they're filed separately and are still there after you re-install.
