Where is this setting?

O.K. I may be losing my mind, but I can't find the following setting anywhere in fs9 ??? Anyone help me navigate to it?

WATER REFLECTIONS:
The water reflections slider offers five values: None, Detail, Reflection, and Detail and Reflection and 3-D waves. The Detail creates animated textures that simulate the appearance of breaking waves. The Reflection setting adds the appearance of sunlight reflecting on water. The 3-D waves setting further adds textures that create a rolling wave visual effect. Higher settings may affect simulator performance on some computers.

Note: You must have the Terrain detail slider set above None in order to see any water reflection effects.

Note: Not all video cards support water reflection effects. If your video card does not support these effects, you will not see water reflection effects in the simulator even when this slider is moved to the right.

To adjust water reflections

Move the Water Reflections slider to the right to increase realism.
-or-
Move the Water Reflections slider to the left to decrease realism.

Thanks in advance :)

Hey Hagar :)  If you look at the article published by microsoft, notice it reads "The water reflection slider offers five values: none, detail, reflection, detail and reflection, and 3d waves". It goes on to read "the 3dwaves setting further adds texture"...blah blah. Have you seen five value options for water reflections? All I find is "land only, land and water, then low or high for water effects. 3d waves selection? Where? Water reflections slider is also non existant. See what I mean? What do you think?

I had another look at the Learning Center article from your link which I think is the same as in FS9. I agree that it's a tad confusing but I think it's a case of juggling two different settings, the Terrain Detail & Water Effects sliders shown in my shot. Although it's not mentioned I suspect that the Special Effects Detail options might also affect it. Basically, the full effects are selected with both sliders hard to the right. If your video card is not capable it won't let you use the full settings. As I could never get the full water effects on my poor old machine I can't verify this. I can select either Land & Water (Terrain Detail) or High (Water Effects) but not both together.

PS. Both sliders have 3 positions with hard left being None or OFF & hard right being FULL.

Terrain: None - Land Only - Land & water
Water: None - Low - High

I assume a combination of the different settings gives you the effects options corresponding to the descriptions used in the article. To get the full water effects both sliders need to be at hard right.

I think we're about as close as we're going to get on this one. I agree Hagar, Microsoft really muddled the instuctions. Appreciate both your help, Hagar and Commoner :) Now time to get back in the air.  ;)

Settings-Display
Slide the water effects all the way to the right.
The reflection is in  aircraft , it has to be checked.
Works for me.

...mmmm...in Settings/Display/Aircraft...is a checkbox named reflections which is concerned with the display of aircraft....any metallic parts for example will not look metallic unless this box is selected....nothing to do with water though I don't think....there really are no real water reflections, if you mean you can see the aircraft's image reflected in the sea or lakes...they don't exist in FS..not in the way they are in M$'s other games like Links Golf for example which shows a mirror image of trees etc.....c ;)ommoner

I think you're confusing aircraft & water reflections. I don't think they have any relationship with each other. The water reflections are defned from the Scenery display settings as I described earlier. Both sliders must be over to the right for the full effects. As I mentioned before, my video card does not support reflective effects so I can't confirm this.

just to add, when i slid the water effects to the right, my game crashes, so i never had the pleasure....vic.

I suspect your video card is not fully compatible with these effects either. If this is the case it should not be possible to select them. It might be a case of incorrect display drivers.

Hey guys, I think we're straying a bit off the main issue. The fs2004 manual states there are 5 water effects on the water effects slider, one of which is 3d waves. I think the manual is innacurate, as I have never seen any setting on any slider offering 3d waves etc. The issue is not whether we're concerned with whether aircraft or water is effected, nor if certain video cards support specific water effects. Simply put, there are not, contrary to the published manual, 5 settings on the water reflections slider. For that matter, there isn't even a water reflection slider at all in the sim. Looks clearly like a microsoft error. Too bad, 3d waves would look cool...... what do you think?
