Terrain Mesh

Hey guys.

Just curious:  Has anyone downloaded the global terrain mesh by S. Rothlisberger?  Is it worth the effort, or does it slow everything down so much you don't want to use it?

Let me know if you've downloaded any of it and what difference it makes.

Thanks.

apart from some minor sampling errors (at the famous Shell Mera for example where the enhanced terrain is hundreds of feet lower compared to the default mesh) it's quite good

Thanks Commoner.  Definitely worth the effort.  If I can peel my eyes away from football today I'll be trying it out.

..as has been mentioned above...
keep your original files safe in case you need to replace them.

I installed the scenery mesh for California in FS 2002.
Looks fine in places, but in others the default objects appeared incorrectly, ie:

Airfields were elevated or depressed into the ground!
Roads appeared up the side of mountains!
The sea appeared up the side of cliffs!
Buildings and trees floated in the air!
etc, etc...!

This was because of a conflict between the new scenery mesh elevation and the original positioning and elevation of the default objects... ::)...!

I have since reverted all my FS 2002 scenery and mesh back to the default settings... ;)...!

Try it out. It's fine if there are no conflicts... ;D...!

Cheers all... 8)...!

Paul.

P.S. It had no adverse effect on the frame-rates... ;D...!

Fozzer ..you never actually lose the default terrain..this doesn't overwrite anything..it is just added as scenery areas and takes it's place in the priority list along with the rest...just uncheck the downloaded stuff or remove it or move it down the list and you go back to the FS9 default terrain...in a perfect world, everything would be..well...PERFECT eh?..but this is FS9 so we have to expect some small (even some LARGE) imperfections.....NEVER had any conflicts with airports or other addons so that's why I recommend it  and it is so easy to remove if you don't like it..commoner ;)

Hi comm...!

I tried out the terrain mesh for Great Britain...

My local airfield, EGBS Shobdon, suddenly appeared in a valley, surrounded by cliffs... :o...!
Now I've never had any problems in getting my little Cessna off the ground before, but to be suddenly surrounded by cliffs...well... :'(...!
LOL... ;D...!

Cheers Mate... ;D...!

Not much difference in Cincinnati, where I live, but it's a little better.

How long before technology allows MS to use actual, up to date satellite photos to create their scenery?  I want to land my helo in my back yard!

There's tons of photorealistic scenery out there already (even for free) :D  Go do some searches for your local area and you'd be might be surprised at what you will find.  If you want to land in your back yard, you can create your own scenery files with your own house where it belongs. :)

So in answer to your question, probably never since you can do it yourself. ;)

Thanks Sven!  I'm looking now.  I never even thought about creating it myself, so I'll consider that if I can't find anything ready-made.
