fs 9 crashing

Does anybody have a problem with fs crashing on win xp home?  I have had problems the last two days.  I DL the FS9 update but it still crashes.  Twice I had a blue screen and it restarted my computer.  I never had this problem FS2002.  All of my updates for XP are current.  My specs are:

AMD Athlon XP2000
512 MB PC2700 DDR
GeForce 4 MX 440 SE 64MB

It is very frustrating flying and having to save every little bit.

You may want to check out your OS. I've been running XP Home for almost a year and have yet to see a blue screen. Lot of programs have crashed and some have locked XP up (not often) but never a blue screen. Usually with XP Home all I get is dumped back to the desktop when something goes awry.

Did Fs9 run before or is this a new installation of the sim?

this is a new install.  I got it for xmas, installed it, played for a couple of days and got dump to desktop couple times. then for some reson it would not start.  the splash screen would come up and freeze.  thats when i unistalled 2k2 and fs9 and reinstalled fs9 only.  then DL the FS9 update. I am at a loss.

Do you have SP2 installed for Windows XP, if so did you run an anti-spyware program before you installed it?

Make sure you have at least 512Mb RAM available and your Vid card is up to it. Win XP needs 128Mb just to run, never mind any programs you have.

I was having a similar problem. One if the great members of this forum fixed me up. If you have a program called Viewpoint it will crash FS9. Do a search for a file called viewmgr.exe and delete it. It should fix your problem. This is a program for looking at photo's I think. Any way I dumped the whole program and all is well with my FS9. Hope this helps.

I have XP Pro and havn't seen any problems. There is now SP3. Give that a try. I know that some SP's take care of bluescreens. Also, did you computer come with XP Home or did you buy it and install it.

Dont know that it causes 'blue screen', but check the your current version of DirectX,  and that your Nvidia drivers for the Geforce are compatible with your DirectX version.

The lastest DirectX version is 9.0c. I believe that FS2004 installs 9.0a. I think it is still recommended that you upgrade from 9.0a.

To check your DirectX version, and the compatibility of your Graphics Adapter/drivers click Start>Run and type in dxdiag on the 'Open' line, click OK.

Here is a MS Support page that may help:

Well, if you are still having problems...

First thing to try is to close down background applications, like any software firewalls (Zonealarm is notorious!).

Another thing to try would be to run a memory testing program to make sure that your memory is ok.

Often times having a bad stick of memory will cause the computer to reboot randomly.

thanks for all of the replys.  I did instal SP2 and did not run an anti spyware progran.  I will have to look for the picture viewing program.  I do shutdown everything in the background.  My version of xp home was builder installed and I reloaded everything about 7 months ago with another computer builder so I am sure everything got installed right.  I will give theses suggestions a try.  I was flying today, not changing screens, and got dumped 4 times in two hours.  i have learned to save often but it is still anoying.  thanks agian all.
