O.K. probably a really dumb question, but, what is the numbering sequence for the engines? Which engine is number 1, ... number 4

At least for the Boeings, the engine numbers are from left to right (if you're sitting in the cockpit)
On the B747 engines 1 and 2 are on the left wing, while 3 and 4 are located on the right. :)

edit: this picture tells you the whole story in a much better way  :)

Thank you for the quick response. do you know if this holds true for all aircraft?

Nevermind Just checked the tri-motor and it also numbers from left to right from the pilots seat.

Airbus has it the same way, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are aircrafts with the engine order reversed.
There are always exceptions in aviation.  ;D

I've never worked with Airbus aircraft, but I know this is true for Boeing, Aerospatiale, Beechcraft and Embraer.  lol  I'm noticing a pattern, so I think it's safe to say they're all like that.

There are no doubt variations, but I've never heard of any sequence other than #1 on pilot's far left, then numbers increase to the right. That would mean a three-holer would have #2 on the tail, etc. If you're unsure about a particular aircraft, all you need to do is experiment to see which engine starts depending on which # you've chosen.
