Flight Director switch??

Could somebody please explain to me in detail exactly what the FD switch does?
I have been flying jets for some time, fly on Vatsim for a VA and fly IFR.
And yet...... I cannot seem to see what this switch does except for put a nice little pink thing on the Attitude indcator??

Hi Reap.......the Xmas festivities have left my brain in what appears at the moment to be a PERMANENT state of partial suspended animation ....this might pass but meanwhile this link will almost certainly explain things better than I could.....there is a section also in the FS9 Help stuff so look there too...hope this helps,,commoner
