Who'da thought?! Talk about cross compatibility!

Ok.. Sometimes I like to tinker with Flight Simulator in weird ways (yet still letting me use the thing). And I happened to've gotten into a tinkering mood..

Notice anything about the picture?

Image

Yep.. it's the Flight Simulator 98 Bell 206B JetRanger. What I did was copied the main Bell206B file from the Aircraft folder of the main FS98 directory over to FS9's Aircraft directory, renamed it, an then grafted portions of the Aircraft.CFG file over to FS98's file.

I wonder.. (tries the reverse).. Nope.. LOL!

And what' amazing is that the FS98 version flies just as good as the FS2004 version. You just lose your VC, that's all. LOL.

.. and transparent windows - and reflections - and shine.

That's why they brought out new versions

Thought it was a remote control helicopter at first....

<< Oh by the way if you haven't got the Jupiter II yet. Wait till you see what Ronnie is doing ! A complete lower deck level. I have seen the screen shots already, and WOW !

So, does this mean that I may be able to replicate an aircraft I designed for fs98/2000 to fs2004 and get it to work?

Most aircraft created for earlier versions of FS worked fine in later versions - until FS9 came on the scene. Unless they were created with FSDS2 or Gmax they will not be fully compatible with FS9, hence the missing rotors, gear animation etc. etc.

PS. I'm not sure why the FS98 Bell206B DVC doesn't work in FS9. If I remember correctly most FS98 defaults have a DVC.

So in fs9, the plane in my sig probably wouldn't work any differently than it does in '2000?

Depends which 3D modelling applications you used to create & animate it. The visual model & textures should display but some animations might not function or display. The flight dynamics will most likely need tweaking for FS9.

A little too much Christmas spirit there Doug?  ;)

I seem to remember DVC's came out towards the end of FS2000 ...... became standard in FS2002 defaults ...

Now is a time I wish I still had FS98 on my system - just to try it for old time's sake :) It was so impressive in its day!

I created my plane using Flight Sim Flight Shop for fs5, and used a converter (as obviously required) to fly it in FS98 and FS2000

It would probably work in FS9 after a fashion but I would forget it. Things have moved on a very long way since FS5 - & FS2000 for that matter.

I'm willing to take bets on it Pete. Maybe not clickable gauges like in FS9 but a very nice DVC just the same. ;)

:) Pete, don't start making bets where Doug's concerned. He's right on the button as you can see.

None of the gauges work or even move, but it's a basic vc and you can see where the present version came from alright.

Thanks Roger but I have to admit I was being a tad over-enthusiatic. It's not a DVC but a static VC. I should have known better than to argue with Pete. ::) ;)

PS. It's been a long time & I could have sworn those gauges functioned. I must have been getting confused with CFS1*. That's my excuse anyway. The CFS1 defaults definitely have a proper DVC with functional (not clickable) gauges, just like in FS2002. ;)

*PS. Or Flight Unlimited I & II. I had them long before I tried FS98.
