Mobo & Graphics card

I used to see dozens of discussions with fist fights as to which of above are best for FS9.

Now that I came to upgrade there is not one to see and learn from.

I am concidering to upgrade from AMD Athlon 1800XP to Mobo MSI K8N Neo2 Pltnm & AMD 64 3500 90nm, and 1Gig  Ram.

1. Is it too much for FS9 ?.
2. Can I do better ?.

I saved to spend around

ulindel,

Hi + welcome to SimV.

Is it "too much" for fs9?  Personally I don't think ANY PC type computer available yet is too much for fs9.  fs9 is a real bear on overall system performance.

You'll likely get great framerates and stutter free performance........ unlike most people with lesser machines  ;).

That thought is worth exactly what you paid for it.   ;D

best,

That new system looks great for FS9!

The one thing to remember is that FS is a hog not only on RAM and processor speed, but also your graphics card. A combination of those will provide good system performance. The processor is used for placing all your autogen scenery where you want it, and the gfx card is drawing it. So if you have a good CPU and poor gfx card, you'll have lots of objects badly (and slowly) drawn, which results in poor performance. Likewise, a poor CPU and a good graphics card results in slow loading textures which are well drawn!

You might wish to upgrade a gfx card too, but bear in mind these are around

Thanks folks,
I forgot to inquire of grfcs.

Saw the Radeon 9800, and things like X600, X800,
AGP, PCI Express etc.

What combination of mobo, cpu & grfcs would the expert be going for?

Thanks again,               Ulindel.

For the graphics i suggest something along the lines of a 6600gt or 6800GT or a 9800pro, that should allow you to enjoy FS9 in all its glory.

For the Graphics I would suggest a PCI Express card as they are now beginning to replace the AGP cards as standard. You may find that the motherboards with PCIe slots are more expensive though. The cards are more or less the same as the AGP equivalent.

I have the same setup as what you are after and if setup right plays FS very well.  I would suggest a 6800GT for your graphics card if you can stretch to it.

As said though it may be worth looking at PCI express mobo's and going that route.  I don't know enough about them to recommend one as I am happy with my existing system for the time being.

ulindel: I've got a 256 gfx card (nVidia 5700LE) that I'm sure would render fS9 just fine with good fps rates  if I had more RAM (+256) and maybe a hotter CPU (+1.2GHz). Right now it's all about compromise... till I upgrade. But as others have said, I've heard that the Raydeon high-end cards are the ultimate for FS9, if you have the memory and processing power to back it up. This sim is indeed a major system hog!
