engine equilization on t/o

I know it is standard procedure to give the 737 40% power on takeoff and wait for engine equilization, but it wasn't until the other day when I dled a posky a340 package with a comprehensive manual that also suggested the thrust be moved to 50% on takeoff for equilization that I thought maybe this is done on all planes.

Yes, that's general praxis.
If not you may have assymetric thrust with directional control problems, which is augmented on slippery runways.

PS. A stabilized N1 of 35-45% is satisfactory on the 737 before further throttle advancement, then hit TOGA at the "vertical" (throttle position), ie ~70%

Ha, always wondered how to use TO/GA on takeoff.  I had tried it before but I was engaging it at the beginning of the takeoff roll, and it advanced the throttles so slowly I barely made it off a 10,000 ft runway in a 737.  I'll try that now, thanks.

Ok, just tried it, coupla questions...

Is it supposed to throttle down while you're still on the runway?  I've never heard of this before (literally, I've never heard the engines throttling down while on takeoff in real life), I always thought you pushed it to 98% and left it there until off the runway, not that with TO/GA engaged it throttled down.  Now I see how it's possible to maintain v2+20.  It's just, ya know, after doing hundreds of takeoffs with the engines at full power, this sounds kinda weird but I could get used to it.  ;D
