I can't read what your post says might want to use text that can be seen without a microscope! ;)

But judging from the topic title you want to know how to fly gliders?
You must use the "slew" function to get it airborne, while on the runway press "y" and you can then slew to the position you want.
Others may have other ways of doing it.

I can hardly read your question old chap.

To start a glider in the air select any airport & slew to altitude. (Hit Y & then Q.) You can save the flight at this point. Alternatively, I think I there's a glider flight in one of the default flights.

Thanks WarDragon. ;)

I think there's a glider gauge posted somewhere that gives the impression of an aero-tow. I've never tried it myself.

PS. No need for Bold type. The standard font is sufficient. ;)

Thats not very realistic

Although I can get a glider in the air by putting a lot of wind into the game. In real life they have another plane to lift them up I think :o

There is another way to do this too.

From the Menu get the MAP up.

Add 10 to your alt, so if its 512 set it to 522.

Set your speed to 150-200 (higher speed = more altitude)

Hold in up on your joystick and hit the OK button.

Now you will be shooting up into the air as though u have been fired from a catapult.

Gain as much height as possible then level out.

If you wish to stay airborne for a longer period you will require addon scenery that puts thermals into the sim.

There is a payware addon called EMMA field.  Its by LAGO.  It adds a small strip in WA that has gliding facilities too.  Also comes with thermals local to emma field.  I really like this addon.  You get the option to winch launch or aerotow, though the aerotow release is done through the menu and would be better off done by a switch, but its only a minor niggle.

Emma Field is definately one of my favourite Payware Addons for the sim  ;D

Thanks Gixer. Sounds just like a winch launch. I must try that. ;D

WarDragon, flying a sailplane on FS2004 is a bit disappointing, because the game doesn't usually provide either thermal lift or ridge lift.  So all you can do is spiral gently down - boring!

However, if you look up the Flight Notes for the Schweitzer in the Learning Center, you'll find that there are three or four areas where lift is provided in the default game.  From memory, they are San Francisco, Seattle, and Munich.  As Gixer says, you can also download 'Emma Field'.

To take off, just press 'Y' for slew, then F4.  You'll go up like a lift.  When you're high enough (it only takes a few moments) press 'Y' again, and you're flying.   :)

I think M$ actually forgot to put the thermals and ridge stuff in  :(

I remember all the flights mentioned from FS2002 and I think all M$ have done is used the same text.  There is no lift in the sim though the same as there are no pre-made flights for soaring in FS2004.

So even though the Learning Centre lists these places I do not think you will find any I am afraid  :(

They sure forget to put a lot of stuff in, don't they?

The M$ sims might not be perfect but the point is that 3rd party developers can do something about it. That's what I find so fascinating about this hobby. If it wasn't for the open-architecture structure I would have given up long ago.

Gixer mentioned that Emma Field has thermals. If they can do it so can anyone else. It's quite possible that you could find out how to do it yourself by reading one of the FS2004 Scenery SDKs.

Your right there Hagar.  I use Thermeik to create thermal scenery  ;D
