Flight Simulator 2004 Update v9.1

Postby Gus_2004 » Fri Oct 08, 2004 6:51 pm

Hey,

Well, I've been checking the MS site to see when the update to FS2004 would arrive and it was just posted.

http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimulator/downloads.asp

I might wait a couple of days.  :-/

Any "lab rats" about willing to give it a go?

Cheers,

Gus

I might try it. With all the new bridges, we all know one person who will get it. ;)

Note that if you have the no-CD file, some of the enhancements may not appear;.....

Also, it's interesting that the way the readme is written basically infers that they know there are 3rd party programs that "change" the FS9.exe file, so while not a tacit "blessing" it's a recognition that there is such a file "out there" ...  It's also saying, don't come crying to us if you reinstall the no-cd file and the enhancements/FS9.1 doesn't work!

I installed the update .  FS would not run until I deleted FSUIPC version 3.212.  I havent noticed much difference, especially in FPS. Actually no change at all.  I have been having random CTD, but havent flown enough to see if the patch has fixed that or not.  Nice changes at JFK, but I dont fly there much so not a big deal to me.  I let you know how it goes as I fly more. It looks like it isn't doing anti-aliasing any more. I have tried setting it on in the game and setting it on in the video driver and they both look the same, crappy.

OK, I decided to try it much sooner than I thought since I did upgrade the video driver and DirectX to 9.0c just recently.

I did have to update the FSUIPC.dll as noted immediately. On the first try after 15 minutes I got an "application hang" while changing aircraft but this could have been caused by something else. However, this was something I thought would have been cured (as indicated) by this update -- even though I still don't expect miracles with these things. I did send a report on the application hang to MS.

No noticable frame rate change thus far but after tweaking some of the other display settings I was able to get 60 FPS with a clear blue sky background. There seems to be less occasional stuttering and somehow the flight characteristics are ever so slightly smoother although not but much. Some of the bitmap redraws seem to be tiny bit faster as well.

Tested the Captain Sim F-104 and MelJet 777 without any problems.

KJFK looked like it had more trees and I still have to see what these new bridges look like.

Now I have to see how this fares in a multiplayer setting.

Otherwise, everything is working fine -- for now.

Later,

Gus  ;D

"Addressed slow frame rates for flights repeatedly in and out of a common area"

What does this mean?
Just the "major" airport areas? Or would a common area be specific to each persons flight sim, meaning I fly out of the local airport 95% of the time (repeatedly). What is the definition of a "common area"?

"Kennedy Airport (KJFK) features new autogen objects to enhance the high detailed scenery and terrain for the airport and surrounding area."

Why focus so heavily on this particular airport?  I have never flown to or from there I guess maybe I should go see what I have been missing.

Seems they say that they addressed issues from feedback from consumers, but focus heavily on "scenery" specific items. Odd I read a lot of post where people hack down others for wanting pretty scenery, stating that your suppose to be flying not looking around. Which is good though becasue I love to look around and not just at the dash!
What so these "scenery" fixes do to add-on scenery, either payware or freeware? How does the new bridges affect the ones that may have been added by the user? Will it overwrite you do you have to go through and remove each one?

Does anything in the update address graphic issues for people with lower grade graphic cards? (FX 5200 and such).

Sorry for all the questions but I'm not waiting for a download that size unless more questions are answered, and I can't find a download for the "read-me only"

Thanks Fozzer!
So after reading that it basically tells you that if you invested any time what so ever to make your sim more enjoyable DO NOT INSTALL!

I'm sorry but I value all the hard work that designers put forth to make the sim more enjoyable for all  and all the add-ons that I have I love and I doubt very much that this patch can fix anything that is worth replacing all the hard work that I have invested in my set-up.

Maybe this is not the case because the patch is new and little "user" info has yet to be posted, but by reading that it seems the M$ has total disregard to scenery designers and other designers that work hard to "fix" what M$ didn't bother too do in the first place.
Nice try M$ but a little late for a update to a fresh install ;)

Hmm well I'll put on the HD ready to install, but I'll wait for a new no-CD crack to appear before I install it as my CD-ROM drive has been making some odd noises and I don't want to write off disk 4 ::)

Hey, Politically incorrect, notice also they say 'addressed' the problems, clever way of saying 'we may not have fully fixed them' but then again, I'm just being pedantic... ;)
