URGENT! Do not install the new, FS9 "Long-EZ"

Postby Joe_D » Wed Oct 06, 2004 12:05 pm

DO NOT INSTALL IT!!

It only installs via an exe and among other things, it deletes your current splash screen and replaces it with advertising!! >:(

This is absolutely, totally unacceptable, freeware or not!

Fly2e its the one Lemoncat posted the pics up of in the freeware screenshots bit.

It alarmed me at first but I knew where to look and found a backup!

It is a bit naughty that it doesn't give you the option to choose whether you want this splash screen or even that its going to overwrite your splash screen.

Aw cmon - I'm usually the first to jump on anything like this - but this one's pretty innocuous.

Firstly - he tells you in the ReadMe that he's gonna swap your opening splash and says to make a backup.

BUT

SURELY YOU HAVE LEARNT BY NOW - NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER UNZIP ANYTHING STRAIGHT INTO YOUR FS9 FOLDER.

How many times does this have to be posted on these forums before the message gets through. DO NOT DO IT.

I have a folder c:\aircraft. I unzip everything to that folder and manually copy stuff over from it. If I want to I make a backup of my existing GAUGES or EFFECTS folder(s) before I copy stuff over. That way I am protected if things don't work out, I don't like the aircraft or want to remove it again for any reason.

Same if it has an autoinstaller. NEVER TELL AUTOINSTALLERS WHERE YOUR FS9 FILE IS. Most are made by stupid people and are too stupid to find it for themselves. So install into c:\aircraft and you'll get a nice little set of folders that you can copy stuff over from again - in this case it includes one called uires (surprise surprise).

COPY from these folders and then immediately run the deinstaller or deinstall via Control Panel. Then you're just left with the aircraft and all the bits you need in your FS9 folder and you don't have rubbish left in your Registry.

If you don't follow procedures like these you deserve EVERYTHING you get. They and similar things have been discussed SO MANY TIMES ignorance is not an excuse.

And designers - AUTOINSTALLERS SHOULD BE BANNED IMHO >:(

I have to agree with Rollerball.  I never install directly into my FS9 folder.  This is how I got into trouble before.  I did the same with this Rutan Long-EZ, installed it to a temp folder.  So my screen did not change.  I ended up deleting the airplane anyways.  While I can appreciate the work that went into it, I don't think it is very good quality.  If I remember right, it said it was 2 years in the making.  I don't think that was a quality 2 years.  Granted, I could not do better so I shouldn't say anything, but after all it is just my opinion. ;D

I didn't read the readme, but if they let you know what the installer is going to do, I don't think there is any problem with that. ;D

Thanks codered. I have to agree with you, I don't like it much either.

Pitch, roll and yaw stability are all very poor. I've already made quite a few improvements to make it more realistic but I can't really be bothered  ::)

The model is quite good, why it needs a multi page checklist I do not know, also why it should need opening sandwich holders on each wing that you have to close and why you should need to make the pilot appear.

Sorry  ???

I never realized they were cargo canisters under the wings.  I thought it was strange that the underwing fuel tanks would open up like plastic Easter eggs...? ;D

Learn something new everyday.... ;D

Just so there's no confusion.....

I recently down-loaded the Rutan Quickie, no problems with that one.      Was impressed the way the pilot looks all around  as he flies..........

A Long EZ (I think) flies from my local airport - makes the Cessna's etc look like they're standing still.

I think the old country singer John Denver killed himself in a Long EZ - remember reading the crash reports a few years back.

Yes I think he did.

But as I recall he simply ran out of fuel - nothing to do with the plane which has a reputation for being fast but pretty stable I think

Even so, you wouldn't go straight from passing your driving test to a Ferrari, would you ::)

If I remember correctly, they thought he was reaching behind his seat to locate the fuel switch (for the 2nd tank ?) and either lost control and/or concentration.     He was a fairly experienced pilot though and suggestions he may have been under the influence weren't proved.

Has anyone else downloaded the quickie, it's a weird piece of design - typical Rutan of course.

Ditto Rollerball! The best way to do it is definately to send it to an alternate folder! :-)

No mention of this is made in the readme I got.. I have it right infront of me. Perhaps you got a "revised" readme?

Anyway. even if it did, I still believe that changing the splash screen is a bit underhanded to say the least.

???

From the ReadMe:

Automatic Installation:
--------------------
1) Make a copy of the dlgsplash.bmp file located in the Uires folder.
2) Clic on the HBYCT_V1_Install.exe file.

Automatic Uninstallation:
--------------------
1) Clic on the uninstall Menu.
2) Replace the original dlgsplash.bmp file under the Uires folder.

Now c'mon - don't be a grump  :)

Hello rollerball & codered
Maybe Simviation Needs to make a new forum and call it what not to do in FS
A list of the common problems in this forum might help people to find answers without having to guess where to ask for help at. They could read this first then proceed if they still have a question.

I don't think you should ban autoinstallers.  I think you should ban people who are too stupid to know not to overwrite files without permissopm
