MS doesnt normally release any information on the next incarnation of the flight sim until close to release it seems. We can speculate, we can guess, we can pick teeth and wonder, but we dont know :P

I just hope its compatible with all the payware addons I bought for FS9 lol and I sure hope its not like CFS3 which I ummm, dont like at all.

Steve,

M$ adopted the XML standard for scenery in FS9 which will be the default for the future. This means that designers will have to design all objects in GMAX and follow the SDK to place them in object libraries with their own unique GUIDs (identity codes) and then call them from the libraries with XML code.

Designers are doing this already to place default objects which are in default libraries with default GUIDs (and this is how AFCAD works, for example) but I think that although some of the more advanced designers are doing background work and experiments with the new format and creating their own objects, very little, if any stuff is being created and released using this method. I may be wrong there, but it is doubtful whether more than a very few designers are using it. The great majority are still using the old BGLC methods at the moment.

FS9 is designed to be backward compatible as previous sims have also been. However, MS have stated that future versions WILL NOT BE.

You can see where this is going. This means that the vast majority of the addon scenery around now will not be compatible with future versions unless MS relent on their stated policy. Personally, I think they should do because as with GMAX, although all aircraft are now being created with it or some other compatible system, it has in effect taken 2 sim releases to get there (02 and 04).

Unless the same is allowed to happen with scenery, in my view when 06 is released, there will be precious little addon scenery for it and it will be the worse for it. I've always thought that there has never really been a shortage of good aircraft models but excellent scenery is still at a premium. You spend most of your sim time behind a 2D panel or in a VC that could be almost any aircraft but you fly to and from airfields and airports that people always want to be as realistic as possible. That's what largely makes this sim what it is - after all, we don't get it because of the realism of the flight models do we?

I think we need another release (ie 06) to build up that addon scenery stock before the BGLC scenery is switched off. To me this is a more important consideration than many of the sometimes rather silly lists of 'features' that people want to see in the next release that seem to appear from time to time.

What do other people think?

I really couldn't agree more Roger.

I know from real flying scenery is the thing - as all VFR pilots know - your window is your main instrument.

It makes the experience 100 times better when you fly to an airport or field that is accurately rendered & with lots of detail.

The lack of ability to EASILY add to the sim would be a BIG mistake.

I'm personally not in a hurry for another FS version. If they waited to release 06 untill 2006, i'd be happy. I've set up FS9 the way I like it, and i'm not in a hurry to do it all over again ::)

Well stated Rollerball.  I am in the "no new MS FS release for a while" camp too.  Let them issue patches.  Or nothing.... and let the add-on developers work it all out.

I have so much invested now in this version that I will not likely "jump ship" as fast this time as I did with 2002 to 2004.

And yes it is all about better scenery.  A better flight model would be nice.... but it is not worth trading for all the existing scenery "fixes" an going back to what Microsoft does in that department.

best,

Interesting stuff....

One of the great advantages of a site like this is the chance to get the info on trends and developements.

Having traversed all the versions up to date, I am happy with what I have currently "built" and certainly won't want to jeopardise it.

Should MS make sweeping changes, causing simmers to stop and take stock, Simviation will assume even more importance as somewhere to go to keep up with MS9, for those who don't take the next step.

In my case I'll be sticking here to find out the ramifications of the upcoming "patch."

I've got all the versions from FS'98 to FS 2004, and for me the greatest improvement was the jump from FS 2000 to FS 2002.
Over the years I have spent time, and some money, up grading my FS 2002 to the stage where I now prefer it to FS 2004... ;)...!
It really has all I need in a flight sim as a low level VFR pilot, with the exception of a slightly better/more realistic texture at ground level.
If I could have grass texture similar to this at my farm strips, I would be more than happy, I've got everything else thanks to the many freelance designers out there...!

Cheers all... ;D...!

I heard FS2006 will only appear on XBox and will allow you to add custom body kits to your aircraft a'la the "import tuner" crowd.  The game will feature improved weapons effects so that you can blow up buildings and shoot down AI aircraft.  The flight model will be the most realistic offered on the XBox to date.

The release of FS2006 will coincide with the retirement date on all current user's FS2004 lisences.  MS expects to see strong sales of the software once all current copies of FS2004 automatically cease to function on January 1 2006.

(I love starting rumors and getting people paranoid).

XBox 2 will be out by then, but flight sims don't really work on consoles, plus it will never look as good as an up to date PC.  PCs are leagues ahead in the graphics department.
