As has been stated several times before. when it comes to spacing ATC does not know the meaning of the word.
You are not doing anything wrong. I make a habit of useing spot view to look around for any close aircraft before I get to close I will use slew mode than increase the rate to 2x or 4x so any planes in the area land ahead of me. It can scare the Sugar Honey Ice Tea out of you when you are on final in the cesna and a 747 flys over you.

I know it is not verry realsitc but than niether is the 747 landing ahead of you when it has been told that it should be second to land.
