Terrain mesh worth it on fs9

Postby Fox_Molder » Wed Sep 08, 2004 6:26 pm

I have seen this

http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

Is it worth it on FS9 or just a wast of time?

Thanks

The complete scenery set is about 5.78GB. That's why you can choose which area you'd like. I for one don't have that kind of space to spare for stuff that I won't ever use. You can pick 1 or 2 areas that interest you, or more, as your Hard drive can handle. I don't know what effect this would have either, every time you load FS9.

My advice would be to put it in the area you fly the most....

I have it for the area I live in (New Zealand) and the difference it made was amazing.      As an example, near where I live is a small mountain.      As the surrounding terrain is flattish it stands out and can be seen for many miles - an important navigational item as it's near the airport.

The default scenery for this area is totally flat and shows non existent buildings where the mountain should be.    I installed the NZ150 mesh and suddenly everything is as it should be - mountain and all.     New Zealand is mountainous and hilly and the mesh just adds a huge amount of realism - suddenly you get mountains instead of rolling hills.

I wouldn't bother with mesh for areas I didn't  fly over on a regular basis.

It has added about 15 seconds to my load-up time as an estimate.    I understand your query as there have been some huge terrain mesh files available over recent months...     Hopes this helps... Bazza

I've added meshes for Europe and New Zealand (cheers Bazza ;)) and the difference is incredible.
I'd say a good mesh is worth it.

i have the USA Extreme Landscapes package (payware) and it is amazing and friendly on frame rates.
But wanted to add some stuff for outside the US, places I have never visited in real life and probably never will, so question is will these packages hit your frame rates hard or are they pretty gentle?
Load times aren't really a problem with me, it gives me time to strap in  :)

I can't see it being a problem - keeep a close track of what you "put in" and if you find it hitting your frame rates too much simply remove.     In my case it's simply a matter of "unticking" the box in the scenery library....

If you're flying in an area you are familiar with it makes a big difference.  Before I had the NE USA mesh I'd fly around my home area and found it was missing many hills.  Now all the hills are there, accurately modled.  If I wasn't familiar with the area though I would have never noticed I was missing anything.

Bazza/Ozzy,

What's the reference for the NZ scenery? It's not on the map reference.

Thanks!

I have heard that FSGenesis has released a 30M or so map, but I'm too lazy to switch...

I have the FSGenesis stuff for almost the whole USA now.  Yes... it is payware.  (Except the NE section....which I think was released as freeware a while ago as a promotion.)  Right now, I just don't have the midwest section of it installed (it's pretty flat anyway  ;) )....or the Hawaii part.

The files for places like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon are extremely fine detailed mesh.  Flying the canyon now is pretty amazing.  Since I have been there numerous times... the realism factor is greatly improved.

The general difference in the visuals is totally amazing....even if you don't know the terrain well.  Mountains look like MOUNTAINS....... nor rounded lumps.

And the REALLY interesting thing to me is that in the areas where I have the FSGeneisi mesh installed....... even though it is MUCH finer resolution than the default...... my frame rates went UP about 1-2 from the default scenery and the stutters decreased.

I have the freeware mesh downloads from here installed for all of Japan.... and that too makes it look far more realistic than the default.  I know a number of parts of Japan pretty well...... and the change it makes is very noticeable.

The FSGenesis stuff is very worthwhile payware.  If you buy a bunch of the sections at the same time off their site...... you get a pretty substantial discount on the total.

best,

I just posted a couple of shots of the impact of the FSGenesis mesh in the Payware Forum.  You can find it at:
