Are you running XP?
If so try to so a "system restore", do it in safe mode (press F8 at boot up).
See what happens after a restore. Since you mention a reformat you may not have a restore point??
Last time I had something similar it came from video card drivers. Maybe try old ones that worked before.
Do a complete virus, adware, spyware scan. Defrag the HD.
Obviously something isn't right, does your system meet the minimum req.?
Could possibly be lack of memory?
Sorry for all the "possibles" but it could be one or all of the above, or maybe something completly different.
Either ways I hope I might have helped!

Ok, fresh install, blue screens? I'd first check motherboard and / or AGP drivers, (otherwise known as chipset drivers) you should be able to get them from your pc / motherboard manufacturers website.

Direct x is upto version 9c.

Your system RAM is way too low - 512mb is a minimum for fs9 1024mb optimal.

The GF4 MX isn't going to help framerate wise either....

It still should run though!!!

I'm hoping to upgrade my RAM to 1024mb although WIN98 wont let you upgrade hight than 512mb so i'll have to upgrade to XP first.

and my graphics card driver is up to date, would an updated motherboard bios do anything to help??

If the system has been running fine in the past with MSFT Office or other fairly memory-hog apps, you should be OK with FS9.  But, as was pointed out, 256MB is pretty small memory.  It's possible that part of this SDRAM is bad so when you take all the memory with FS9 running, it faults.  (We just saw this problem here at work on a brand new P4 system)

Go buy another memory stick, they're cheep and swap it for the one in your system.  I bet the problem goes away....   ::)

Although 256MB is not enough, i seriously doubt it would cause FS to do what it is doing.
