Autopilot problem...

When I activate the heading autopilot, it always makes the airplane bank right. This is really annoying since I just want to make it hold the heading and I have to counter this by slamming(almost) my joystick to the left. So how do I make it so the autopilot doesn't bank the aircraft when I turn on the autopilot?

The Autopilot automatically turns your plane to your desired heading. If your heading is to the right, then it'll bank right until the desired heading is achieved and will go back to normal position. And same goes if your heading is to the left. If you want your plane to be leveled, then use the LVL function in A/P mode.

Note: LVL function can be enabled only when the HDG mode is disabled.

DiveBomber,

Before takeoff, set the heading bug (or the autopilot heading value) to the runway heading.  How and what you set depends on the aircraft panel that you're using.

Then, when you activate the autopilot, the aircraft will continue on this original heading.

Experience has taught me this lesson more than once.  Most frustrating when ATC is yelling at you and you have no idea why the plane is going astray.

OK, thanks for the responses, but my problem is that when I do activate it, the autopilot makes a hard right bank, then slowly goes to a left bank(when I set it to turn left). This is really annoying when I set it to hold my heading for a landing, but it turns right(and slowly turns back to my selected heading) and makes me go off course.

If what you are saying is for example you are heading 090 and you heading dial/bug reads the same, then when you activate heading hold the plane banks hard right then gradually comes back to the selected course.
That might be flight dynamics problem. If you have AIR ED a little program that allows you to edit the .air file you can probably correct this try to compare with another aircraft like the one with the problem
I not much help when it comes to editing .air files I have AIR ED but really have not tried to figure out whats what here.

Cool, I've never heard of this. Well, I got it.... but I don't know what to edit, I can't find anything that has to do with the autopilot heading, either that or the search function is weird. I don't want to mess up the 737-400 either :(
