Hi al,
I have not had FS9 for long but, I have heard that there is a problem that the autogen can accumulated using up memory.
That's the best way to fix this and, what other tricks and changes do people make to fs9 to make it run smooth and get the best out of (not including the latest and greatest computer of course) .
Cheers
Rhys

Heya HSV,
A common issue with FS 2004 are all of the restaurant signs clogging the memory (especially in urban areas). This over a period of time can cause frame rates to drop.
Two things that you may do to avoid this:
1. In the main FS2004 folder you will find a subfolder called Autogen. In that folder there is a single file named Default.xml . I renamed this file to default.BAK.
2. Find the line in the [Graphics] section of FS9.cfg file that reads TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS=1 and change the 1 to a 0 so that the new line reads TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS=0 .
You'll be missing some fastfood restaurant signs, however, you should see both an end to the poor FPS when returning to the airport to land and an increase in framerates when flying in the city.

Greycat,
It is not just the ff signs that this trick deletes... it is a lot of stuff it deletes from the visual scenery. There is a lot of discussion about this in old threads here if you chack back in time.
If you don't mind taking stuff OUT of the sim to get better framerates... than that of course doesn't matter. But if you do, this should be approached with caution.
best,

It's always a trade-off between scenery and framerates, there's not many games (or applications if you don't like the games label) that will tax your machine as much as a Flight Simulator!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. I'll make a backup copy of the files I need to change, and give it a go.
Thanks once again
