I've just bought it the other week as I've already said in another thread,  but I'm having a few probs with it.

1) I seem to be able to have all my settings on max without any probs whatsoever. However I don't understand what the target frame rate should be. 10-100-unlimited.

2) What should my resolution be? I haven't a clue. It doesn't affect the game, just the 'home page' gets smaller. The actual flying screen doesn't.

Nothing seems to  slow it down, despite it being an emachines!!!

3) But I also have this zig-zag line running along my plane edges. I don't know how to get rid of it.

4) The make up of the ground and runway is all made up of squares. Most odd, but when I set it on rock bottom graphics, - the defaults on everything... I still get this.

Blocky edges can be fixed with FSAA but let's start with the specs first...

This is a problem??? I wish I had the same problem!!  :D  

Target frame rate makes your computer lock onto that frame rate and not waste any further processing power getting more than that.  I have mine set to 20 FPS and its more that acceptable for smoothness.  Greater than 30 FPS and its supposed to be imperceptible to the human eye anyway but i think that is a contenuous issue with some people!!!  ;)    Best thing is just to experiment with your setup until you're happy.

2.  Resolution should affect the quality of the image you see on screen. I set mine to 1024x768 and I have happy balance between detail and frame rates.  Again, as in point 1 you just need to experiment with settings that are right for you.

3.  What graphics card have you got? usually jaggies can be improved by turning anti-aliasing or antisoperic(haven't a clue on spelling that!) filtering on or up - do it from the hardware settings of your card in windows not from the display settings in the sim. You'll get better results.

4.  Hmmm not sure about this one... can u give anymore details, is rest of your scenery blocky? etc.

Right thanks very much... here's my reply:

For 1 & 2  I can have it on any setting, I think without it affecting the sim. Just the page where you get the plane, do the settings etc gets smaller.

I gave the grpahics card details exactly the same time as you posted yr reply!

For 4 I could post some screens shots if u want, though I've never done it be4, and not sure how 2.

What I'll do is, I'll just fly again on max resolution and unlimited frame rates.. and tell you what happens. Hang on a sec!

From the main screen, hit 'settings', then 'display', then click the 'hardware' tab.
Check that your 'Hardware Rendering Options' are all checked; then just below them check 'filtering' - ensure it is set to either 'bilinear' or 'trilinear'.

That ought to do it.

Well, I've already had it on trilinear.
I'll have to look at it all again tomorrow. Maybe rebooting the computer may help, instead of making one change after another, without refreshing the game.  I also tried flying on max resolution and max framerate and it didn't work! But I have everything else on max. I'll just have to give more time to it. I'll report back on any progress.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned updating video card drivers. I could be wrong but seem to remember some issues with the Geforce FX series when FS9 was first released.

The display resolution from the sim settings does not affect the size of the screen when in Full Screen mode. I suggest using the 32 bit options which seem to give best results for most people. As an example I use 1024 X 768 x 32 for FS9 & FS2002. You could try setting the target frame rate at 25 - 30. There is no point in having it any higher except on a very powerful machine. IMHO

If you've done all that without success you will have to experiment with the display settings. Anti-aliasing & Mipmapping seem to have different effects on various systems. Good luck.

On your hardware settings, what do you have your Mip mapping set to.

yep I have it on that... just doing the driver thingy at the moment....

It depends on your system. If you set the target frame rate higher than your system can cope with it will use all available resources trying to do the impossible. These resources could be used elsewhere to improve your graphics. As Ross pointed out, anything over 30 fps won't make any difference to what you can see. The object is for the sim to to run smoothly with the best possible quality graphics for your particular system.

PS. Next time you fire up FS9 check the average frame rate. If this is lower than your target frame rate try reducing it to match, or lower. You might find that you can then increase the other display settings a notch. It's all a matter of trial & error.
