Your altitude is low from what it should be. When you see 2 red and 2 white light then you're at the correct altitude (you're on the glide slope).

I take it you talk about the 2 or 4  lights to he left side of the runway?? :D

They are teling you whether your approach is too high or too low. ;)
2red and 2white means your on the right glide slope.
more red means you are too low.
more white means you are too high.

hope ive helped.

Well, the descriptions so far has only been the PAPI lights (Precision Approach Path Indicator )
There are another set of reference lights as well, the VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator) lights, but I guess those have been overlooked ;)

I really don't know about them. What's the difference? Where are they? Do they both exist on a rwy or there is only one or the other?

It's all in the lessons, gents.  All in the lessons.

Okay, if you mean by lights changing from white to red on the side of the runway (usually the right) then that can either by VASI or PAPI.  Both change colour depending if you are high or low in your approach.

PAPI are four circular lights in a horizontal row.  If they are all white then you are too high.  If two are white and one is red then you are perfect.  If they are all red then you are too low.

VASI are four boxes, two above the other two, that are either red or white.  Again both white is too high, one red, one white is on target and both red is too low.

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing.  If you need more clarification then just let me know.
