In the list of assignable commands for FS2004 there are a set of EGT commands:

EGT3_SET

EGT4_INC

I imagine that they are something to do with the Engine as there are four of them but beyond that I am clueless.

I suspect the _DEC and _INC ones are commands to increase and decrease engine power, and the _SET command would be to set N1 bugs?

EGT stands for Exhaust Gas Temperature. It's the temperature of the exhaust gasses. Some of the higher performance planes include guages to monitor this. It's important in flying high performance GA aircraft but in the sim it doesn't mean much. You can set the plane on the ground and lean the mixture until the EGT hits the top of the scale and then leave the plane running until it runs out of gas and you will still have an engine.

In the real world however it's used as an indicator of how much to lean the mixture as you gain altitude. I'm not sure the specifics and I imagine that would depend on the specific engine. In the sim however I use it by leaning the mixture until I notice a peak in EGT and then back off just a hair. I usually do this about every three thousand feet. That seems to give me good performance and a decent sounding engine. I wish there were more specifics on things like this though.

On piston engines the EGT is what you monitor to set your mixture control, unless you have 'auto-mixture' turned on.
