Fly/schmly. An aircraft like that is meant to be landed on a big lake where you can fish from the doorway, eat a good meal, and let the rocking of the plane lull you to sleep. :D

Just a quick question RE: the PT-6's on the Turbo Mallard...

What are you guys using for Power Settings (Prop Pitch, Condition Levers) @ Cruise & Descent?

Always curious; I'm continually wondering what everybody tends to use when flying with a PT-6.

Alan, my suggestions are in the checklist.
Takeoff 100% Torque, 100%RPMs (5 mins max)
Climb 90% Torque, 95%RPMs
Cruise (your choice) 80% Torque, 90%RPMs (depends on altitude) gets you around 190 knots ground speed
Econo-cruise 78% Torque, 80% RPMs (depends on altitude)

Its great fun off and on the water, thanks for replying for me Milton been having power problems, without power for most of yesterday and todays a bit intermittent you don't realise how much you rely on electricity until you don't have any. Big hole in the road around the corner and the power seems to be back on.

I'm trying to get a General idea about PT-6 operations, so I can become more consistent about how I fly PT-6 equipped airplanes.

One of the big differences for those who switch from piston engines to turboprops is managing the PT-6 engines.

Gas turbines run very high RPMs (N1) and have a broad range. Therefore it takes longer for responsiveness to be felt on the (N2) output side.
You have to stay ahead of situations and when making throttle/torque changes, there is some delay as you wait for the engine RPMs to change.
If you watch the EGT gauges, you get a sense of fuel and heat changes that will ultimately be reflected in torque and rpms changes. Just takes a few seconds.

And as an aside, the Autofeather feature kicks in at 83% torque and comes off at 82%.

We have set up the ground handling characteristics to make it easier to control during idle or taxi whether on land or water. BTW, you can use the reversers (hold down F2 when at idle (F1)) on water as well to help control the aircraft. That is important in FSX where the water is not so sticky. A single tap of the F2 button with "flatten" the prop pitch to reduce static torque.

The Reference should help you through all phases of flight.
