Well I finally got FS9 to run in Windows 10 but I had to resort to a little trickery to do it. I had to install the NO CD PATCH and it works like a champ.
I know this is cheating but what the heck I would rather cheat alittle than give up FS9 for now.

Ain't cheating dude; MICROSOFT SHOULD HAVE FIXED THIS FOR US! You're just doing their job for them, that's all. Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

Therein lies the problem; in reality, Microsoft hasn't any reason to fix the issue. As far as they're concerned, FS9 is considered 'Obsolete Software', and is no longer supported. If it doesn't work with W10, so sorry.

So... it appears as if there's a workaround, but it requires using something that has been around for years, and is considered a 'faux pas' by many.

But, after all that has transpired, and considering Microsoft's view about the Software... is it really THAT bad to use in this day and age?

Is it 'cheating', as Gary says, or being 'resourceful'?

The real problem here is that the "No CD" .exe file is regarded as piracy and you won't find it on SimV. As stated before, the next problem is finding a place to download from that won't corrupt your pc with malicious files. Best of luck with that. I hope you scanned your pc thoroughly Gary.

FS9 is fully compatible with no additional action being necessary. I found that it would not run, even in so-called compatibility mode, without the mod that Gary has described. Secondly, If Microsoft has abandoned FS9; they could hardly call it “piracy” if others strive to make it work by modding it.

As far as DRM’s are concerned, I am happy to comply with them as long as the software is being supported by the originator. When they have abandoned the product and ceased support, then I have no qualms about hacking it. Perhaps I am legally wrong (I really don’t know anything about software law) but I think that is a reasonable moral stance.

What surprised me was when I tried to run FS9 it said I had to run it as administrator which it never needed in Windows 8.1
I think the problem is that by default Windows 10 treats any unrecognized program as needing administrator privileges.
This option can be turned off but I never tried that.

On the topic of piracy, if you really want to get technical, anyone who has done ANY TYPE of modification to their stock FS9 is a pirate since in the EULA it said we agree not to modify or change any part of the enclosed software. However, Microsoft has been lax on that policy thanks to the numerous addons that have made the sim more enjoyable for millions of people. That being said, I for one am just thankful we are able to have what we have and if the "NO-CD File" was so bad, it would've been a much bigger deal than it was, especially when it comes to the law. I can only imagine how many people it has saved due to scratched or damaged discs. In regards to Windows 10, the way I see it is this, we need to face the fact that there will come a time where we will no longer be able to use it. It is an 11 year old program after all and many programs of that age will no longer run on a current system. Let's all just be happy that this is a simple fix and not the end of our beloved sim. At least not yet.

Personally, I think the issue of the modification in question is just going to multiply, as more and more discover the method, end up using it, then pass it along to others in the FS Community. Like jrbirdman said... if it really was an issue for Microsoft, then they would have done something long ago to squash it.

Gary, can you tell an old country boy with little computer experience just exactly how you did this patch thing to get fs9 to working again and were you able to keep all of your old add ons? From a greatful old man!!!!!Roy
