Has anybody taken the plunge and tried Windows 10 yet ?
How does FS9 and/or FSX work with Win 10?

Windows 10 / FSX : no problem

There might be a glimmer of hope if you updated without getting a notice that your update was ready to install it is likely that you are missing some key elements. I watched a video the other day and from what it was saying that each machine would get a custom upgrade designed for what was currently on there system at the time. Which is why not every one has got the message that the upgrade is not ready. Now I did the same thing I installed Windows 10 before I got the message stating that my upgrade was ready and like you stated FS9 would not run no matter what you did. But know I am thinking that just maybe there is something missing that will allow you to run it using compatibility mode.
But I could be wrong but one can only hope.

I don't run FS9, but users at other sites are reporting that FS9 runs fine on Windows 10 once the 9.1 update and the no CD replacement for FS9.EXE are installed.

I did not run the update in Windows 10 because I forgot about it. At this point I plan on waiting till I get the message saying that my upgrade is ready.

One big problem The no CD crack is considered as piracy and you can not find it any where that is considered safe to download it from.
I for one will not go to any site that has downloads like this as you are asking for problems just going there.
Now to throw a real kink in the problem. After I rolled back to Windows 8.1 and reinstalled FS2004 I ran the update and FS2004 would not run at all it crashed to desktop I than uninstalled the update and it works fine. Now that is strange to say the least.

Which makes one wonder why the "updates" to operating systems when WinXP works just fine .... with MS Flight Sims ..... Office software ..... video and audio processing software .... et al .... etc.

Maybe progress ain't so hot after all!

XP isn't going to support new hardware, like USB3 external drives and such, and it's not actively supported by Microsoft any longer. You could ask that question about any new product, really - why do car companies have new models every year, why are things redesigned with new styles and functions? It's how capitalism and markets work - they need something new to sell, that is the system. Everything in this world has a life cycle - a beginning, a middle, and an end, and that's true for software as well, no matter how much people hate change. We heard the same laments when Windows XP replaced Windows 98 as the mainstream OS, again when Win 7 surpassed Windows XP, skipping the short-lived interim Windows 2000 and Vista OSs. Windows 8.1 has been no problem once you learn how to ignore/replace the useless Metro/Modern interface, but that's another discussion. So, the OS cycle starts once again.

I understand why capitalistic companies keep introducing new products ...... but why do WE still have to keep buying them whenever what we "have" is working just fine? XP may not be supported anymore, but maybe it doesn't need anymore support anyway!

The problem is that new software may not run on it. The other problem is no more updates which makes your system more vulnerable to viruses and spy ware.
One other problem is that it will not support new hardware like USB 3.0
Other than that it will always run. But as each day goes by you are taking more chances that you will get a problem sooner or later and than you are Up A polluted tributary with out means of motivation. Nice way of saying up S*** creek with out a paddle.
