Agggghhh. I must have downloaded something nasty. My FS9 now hangs up on the initial screen. I can't even get into the program to remove any sceneries. I did try and just take them out of the addon scenery folder, but nada. I think what I might have done is to load a scenery with the same name as a previous one. Of course it would overwrite. But I removed it freom the directory. Now, whatever I try, it just hangs up on the initial start screen. Can anyone offer help?

Try renaming Your Scenery cfg file just change the type from .txt to .bak
By doing it this way you still have the original file in case it does not work.

The only thing left is to figure out what was added last and remove those line(s). I gather you do not have a back up of the original file.
I am not trying to blast you or anything but it is a good practice to back up every folder in FS2009 you have and keep it someplace safe like on a thumb drive.
NEVER make any change to FS without first backing up the folder that you are going to change failure to do so can cause nasty results.
AS I always say BACKUP BACKUP and Backup again before making any change to FS no matter how simple it looks. You can not go wrong by doing this.
I make a new back up of my files every week even though I am not going to make any changes. This may sound like over kill but not in my book.
I even put a date in the file so I know exactly when it was backed up last.

Thank you Gary for your help and advice. It's always nice to have someone around like you to slap people like me on the wrist. Having just arrived on the scene of Flight Simming(1986), I really should have learned my lesson. It's not that I don't do these things, it's remembering that I have done them and then forgetting how to use them. Such as my new computer, which has a 27" screen and all sorts of goodies such as USB3 ports that I have taken the liberty of loading with huge capacity flash drives to automatically save files that could be corrupted. Then of course, trying to remember which version of FS is actually running and able to do what? O well, it's my way out now, since I am past the age and fitness both physically and I guess mentally of continuing RL flying. Thank you once again Gary, for being so nice.

Hi,
rename your fs9.cfg not your scenery, restart fs9 and a default fs9.cfg will be recreated, if loads Ok compare the old renamed fs9.cfg with the new one.
To find fs9 on win 7, find C:\Users\your name here\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9.
Where the 'your name here' is above, insert your user shown when you log into windows.

steve.

Thanks Steve, I remember it well! I would do that but I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I haven't a clue how to find the FS(.cfg file there. I can't even find the user, even though I know it's there. I get an error from another sneaky file trying to load that says it can't find c:/user/appdata something or other. Just give me time......

I haven't seen win 8 yet and don't intend to unless forced via new pc etc so don't know where it would be, did you upgrade from win7?
Try the search box to find it but the apps folder maybe hidden.
I've just 'googled' and someone gives path as being the similar to how it was on XP.
Try C:/ Program Data/ Microsoft/FS9/
Can you access the C drive?
regards
Steve
